Endless Blockades

blockades-family

Blogging about blogs is kind of lame. I’m not one to totally poach and just cut and paste other people’s images and then call it a post. Also, Vice won’t let me get away with that…weird, for some reason things like “original writing” are important over here. However, I do have to say that when my friend turned me on to Endless Blockades I reverted to my grindcore teen days and spread my wings. Metal back patches make me happier than just about any other sort of music-related fashion statement. Combine those with an unrestricted look at the phenomenon of back patches and adorned jackets/vests in general and you’ve got a pretty damn satisfying photo blog.

Magazine extras - Rave on

picture-2

As a special treat, we have here some images left over from the article on Gavin Watson’s new book, Raving ‘89. This was the bit of raving that happened before it got all smiley faces and glowsticks. We had a chat with a man called Gary Ellis, who was instrumental in setting up the raves that Gavin was attending in warehouses, fields and the homes of unfortunate kids in 1989. Gary Ellis was the business minded end of the rave scene, and also had a thing for really big mobile phones. Read more »

Racist Photography Enthusiast? Then Look No Further

rasi7b12_1

Racist photography enthusiasts are so difficult to buy presents for. For a start, you don’t want to buy them anything too big, or overtly racist, i.e. flags, banners or posters like these, as they might not want to put them up in their house for everyone to see. So they’ll have to lie to your face and pretend that they have, when in fact all they’ve really done is quickly stuck them up with Blu Tack just before you pop round their house.

Surely there’s a way to ease this pressure? Yes! There is! Thankfully some kind people on eBay have created a ‘Hasselblad gollywog, in fact, they’ve created ten of them and they all come with their own certificate of authenticity to show that they really are ‘Hasselblad golliwogs’! Classy enough for Carol Thatcher and racist enough for your most bigoted backstreet ethnic cleanser.

Thank god, I’d hate to think that some pervert could just sit in their house creating these humerous little statues without an authentic endorsement from Hasselblad, or the international golliwog foundation…

If you have the capacity for medium-term memory, you may have a recollection of a photography competition we ran a short while ago in conjunction with Ctrl.Alt.Shift. The competition’s aim was to highlight the issues of gender and poverty through photography, and after a gruelling selection process the winner and the 15 runners up were chosen.

Ctrl.Alt.Shift and Vice’s Gender, Poverty and Power photographic competition challenged young photographers to submit their work to a panel of mentors, including Alex Sturrock, Alexa Chung, and Valerie Phillips. What we received was an overwhelming insight into both the state of human rights at home and abroad, and the extent of ever-emerging young artistic talent.
