We played the Nazi drinking game before Facebook deleted it

Last week, there was huge uproar over a Nazi drinking game invented by some HILARIOUS ironic students, who had more than 12,000 members in the Facebook group they’d dedicated to their totally inoffensive, tasteful piss-ups. The group’s been suspended now, but we were just in time to have a go at the game everyone’s talking about using a few interns and some middle-aged strangers we got to make up the numbers.

When drinking becomes art and art becomes an excuse to drink, aka how to film a drinking battle

Excessive drinking paired with art has always been deeply entrenched in any city’s culture. Berlin’s best proof is the cinematographic document Berlin Drinking Battle by Rolf S. Wolkenstein and Wolfgang Hogekamp. The film was made in 1989, just one night before the fall of the Berlin wall. Obviously, they managed to somehow document their benders on video (even if that was before the era of digital cameras) rather than being sensationalized as binge drinkers in the tabloids. We wanted to know how they got this show on the road and met up with Rolf S. Wolkenstein to have a sober little chat about schnapps and the 80s film scene. Read more »

Don’t be bad in Saudi Arabia

On my way to a design conference in Jeddah last month the Air Canada ticket lady begged me not to get on the plane, claiming that I would be tossed in a dungeon upon arrival because my skin is pink. She was, of course, retarded. After spending a week in Jeddah, what I found to be most shocking was not the dress code or the peculiar security measures (photographing official buildings is technically espionage punishable by beheading) but more than anything, the place looked and felt almost exactly like a gated suburban community in Arizona, just with less golf and more praying.
