Mephedrone is a drug that you can buy on the internet that’s been described as a cross between cocaine and MDMA. It’s been doing the rounds in gay clubs for a while but now it’s crossing over into straight places. It’s not been illegalised yet and, as it only costs £60 for six grammes, we had one of our writers get some and made him go on a bit of a bender with it. The interview you read below was done two days after doing the first line and was conducted about three hours after the hallucinations and panic attacks had subsided.
Vice: So where did you get it from?
Guy Who Took It: Some website that’s like an online version of one of those stalls at a festival that sells wizard hats and poppers and glow-in-the-dark aliens. It was 60 quid for six grams in a big baggie and it looked alright. It didn’t look too bad at all.
What was it like compared to coke?
It stings your nose quite bad. And it’s quite thick so it gets stuck up there. So when you’re talking to people you sound like Ringo. Which is unfortunate because I was talking a lot.
So it’s like coke. You just get all angsty and talk too much?
Kinda but not really. It’s got mild hallucinogenic qualities. It made my eyes wobble around. Things would get blobby. My eyelids would start fluttering and I found myself staring at things and noticing floppy waves of heatwaves coming off them. There was none of the intensity of E or MDMA hallucinations though. The last time I did MDMA I did a cough sweet-sized lump and melted into a puddle in the street. My girlfriend had to come and pick me up.
Where were you when you did the mephedrone?
It was a classic way to do drugs; a crappy fashion party with free booze and loads of annoying people.
Great. And you were there talking like Ringo, and seeing heatwaves.
Yeah and I was giving it to anybody I knew telling them how great it was because this was the first hour of taking it. I’m cringing now thinking about it.
Ouch.
Yeah, but that was the good part of the experience.
What was the bad part?
It went downhill about an hour after the first bump. Because I had this stuff in your pocket and I felt compelled to give it to people I’d never met before and, of course, to do as much of it as possible. And so you end up going to different locations, people’s houses that you normally would never go to.
How much of the six grammes did you manage to plow through?
I did all of it. Sniffing and coughing it down, all the time sounding like Ringo. And then I did that thing where you drink anything with even a hint of booze in it. Like, other people’s half-drunk alcopops, red and white wine mixed together in a mug, then vodka and warm diet lemonade in a paper cup. I also remember a tiny sip of straight whiskey out of the bottle that had some cigarette ash in it.
Mmmm.
I’d done all the six grammes by about 6am the next morning. Plus a gramme of illegal cocaine that felt amazing in comparison.
How did you and your nose feel the next day?
Really really terrible. It was the classic combination of sadness and fear but feeling even more cheap and dirty than after doing proper cocaine. I guess that’s what you pay for with coke; a rarefied sense of suicidal depression and shame. There was a big lump of stuff all still stuck up there, merged into one mess of crap and ear, nose, and throat pain. My mouth is killing me.
I have to say it doesn’t sound THAT bad.
There was also a totally paralyzing mania. I felt totally insane. I remember just standing in my front room staring at the all the blinds on my windows and peering between them. They had heatwaves coming out of them. And I was terrified of every car that came past. Each one of them sounded like it was a bunch of people coming to visit me and tell me about all the bad things I’d done in my life, or kill me or something.
Eek.
Being on your own in an empty house intensifies all the bad stuff. And it got worse when I looked it up on Wikipedia. There was all the boring stuff about the different scientific compounds it was made out of but what really stuck with me was the bit where it read: “DEATHS” and had things like: “The 18-year-old and some friends took the substance in combination with cannabis on Friday, 12 December. An ambulance was soon called to Bandhagen after the girl went into convulsions and turned blue in the face”.
Imagine dying and being left there looking like an asphyxiated Smurf. What effect did the Wikipedia thing have on you?
Panic, regret, shame, fear. I chain-smoked. I don’t normally smoke. There was a mild fear of death, but the sadness was so intense it negated the fear.
What did you learn from your mephedrone experience?
I haven’t really touched drugs for months and months because I had a wee problem with a couple of things a few years ago. And I guess this seven-gramme bender was a way of reminding myself about how grim the world of free booze, shitty uppers and bad people is. It’s one of the reasons I got addicted to drugs in the first place. I’m never going back there. That’s my excuse anyway. Can I go home now?

Most people only go through 0.5-2g in a session unless they’re staying up for days, but something like 4g in 3 days we would consider heavy use on the forum I go to, you took 6g in a night ON YOUR FIRST GO! Please anyone reading this dont assume legal = weak and that this guy did 6 grams because i can assure you he didnt, these are strong research chemicals not to be doing doses that high if he did, 200mg orally is enough to produce a good high and 1-2g is considered a big session so with his imaginary gram of coke on top please dont do anything that this guy has.

What an epic fail of an article.
1. If you purchased 6 grams and you were ‘giving it to anybody’, how did you manage to consume all 6 grams? 6 grams of meph on your first go would send you into psychosis and end up with a trip to hospital, regardless of this mystery gram of coke you also consumed.
2. You say coke was great in comparison? Absolute nonsense. Mephedrone is known to interact badly with coke, as myself and many others have found. Both counteract each other and limit the euphoria and cause over stimulation and crazy heart pulpatations. Also, unless the coke was really, really good stuff no way would you find it much better than meph. Meph is much better and longer lasting than much of the typical UK street coke.
3. You keep going on about snorting it. You don’t even need to snort it! The most effect method of consumptions is bombing about 250mg and then stopping up with odd lines if you feel like it.
The entire article is just a mess really. If anyone wants to have a proper shot at meph then maybe approach it subjectively and use a regulated amount. I question whether the test subject even had meph in the first place…

i absolutely love this stuff, usually phrases like “a mix between coke and MDMA” are bullshit but that’s exactly what it’s like. We got 6g in for this weekend and ended up doing it over 2 nights/days between 3 of us, can’t believe he polished off however much by himself, either he got a shit deal or he’s wayyy hardcore. I was pretty sceptical as it’s ostensibly ‘plant feed’ or whatever and was pretty gutted we hadn’t got something more tried and tested in as the weekend comes only once a week… but i did my first line of it in a bar and was totally expecting to feel nothing and then i came up literally straight away and felt genuinely amazing. I would say this is not one to be underestimated- it had none of the horrid comedown of M and none of the price tag of coke but with all of the combined benefits. It’s perfect for a bender, like 6g for £40! I now genuinely prefer this to coke and M, it’s not even like a cheap alternative, it’s actually better, i couldn’t believe it. Needless to say we’re totally stocking up on this shit before they ban it. I can’t believe it’s still even legal tbh. It’s way my new favourite thing.

This article is absolutely rubbish.
First time I took Methedrone I have to say I was getting myself ready for a letdown. Legal drugs are more often than not shit.
However, I actually had one of the best nights I’ve had in a couple of years.
MDMA and Coke don’t do it for me anymore. Coke is too weak for starters and doesn’t do anything except make my teeth numb. MDMA is just something that I’ve done waaaaaaaay too much of and I don’t know whether I’ve built up a tolerance to it or if it has just “lost it’s magic” like a lot of people say happens.
This stuff doesn’t last as long as MDMA and isn’t as strong, but unlike MDMA, you can keep topping up on it and go as long as you want. Generally when you start coming down from MDMA, taking more won’t bring the high back to where it was. You’ll just make your teeth chatter. Methedrone is like speed or coke in the way that once it starts wearing off you can have yourself a line or a bomb and be right back in the lovely state you were in before.
Like someone else posted earlier, I would recommend taking a nice hefty bomb to start off with and then topping up with lines later on.
This stuff has a strange smell and lots of people say not to snort it, but I actually found it completely painless. Anyone who has snorted MDMA crystals knows that it can be a world of nasal suffering, but this stuff goes down a treat.
Anyway, I give it a thumbs up. Ignore the shitty article.
