They’re an intuitive bunch the Japanese. They’re so tapped into the zeitgeist (or the Viceland server) that 48 hours before we do it, they know that we’ve got a piece coming up on their secret hidden monster island, they jump to and re-open the place to the public. They may be taking boats to Hashima Island, but they haven’t landed yet, which officially makes us still tougher than a load of school children and old people. Anyway, we were there first. Here are some more photos depicting Battleship Island’s beatific isolation, look at them quickly before they build a gift shop and your mum goes on holiday there.
Those wishing to visit the island should apply to the Nagasaki Municipal Government at 095-829-1152. Tickets are 150 yen for primary school-aged children, and 300 yen for those of junior high school age and older. The Yamasa Kaiun maritime transport company also conducts cruises to the island, including a trip ashore, out of Nagasaki harbor. Interested parties can contact the company at 095-822-5002.

Attract boatloads of tourists to the island, then leave them stranded and commence Battle Royale 3.

It’s a bit like that place in that dreadful horror movie based on a video game that wasn’t Resident Evil.
But much better obviously.

Interestingly, the island buildings had no elevators or escalators. Stairways were the norm and there was a large central outside stairway which was built in odd dimension was there by a real bitch on the legs. Carrying the groceries to the 9th floor from the market in the central court would have built some great legs.
They most likely left everything because they just didn’t want to deal w/ moving stuff.

Nice post! I loved the original post, and all of the wonderful pictures yall have.
I was trying to find a contact section, but could not find one. I have a question about the photos. Could you please have the photographer, or someone else contact me via email? It would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

A frightening look at how virtually any city would look after a few short decades of neglect… the “end of the world” movies all underestimate the degree of collapse, rubble & decay.
An incredible, insightful look at a human-free planet…

Hey, I just wanted to let you know that for a round trip ticket from Nagasaki Dejima Wharf it is 4,300 yen. Only a certain number of people can go at a time, and shit fills up fast so make your arrangements the day before or you won’t be able to go. I ended up going to Ioujima instead of this place today because they were sold out.
They better not have cleaned up everything when I get there.

Let’s just hope that if they do another ‘Battle Royale’ that it turns out better than that sequel!
Looks really interesting, suspect it was better when you got there - before all the screaming kids - but if I’m ever in town…

Wouldn’t that be a great idea for the next “Survivor” season? “Survivor: Hashima Island”! I’m not into reality show, but i’d watch that one!

I actually heard this was a really haunted island. I am talking Poltergeist meets Exorcist meets …..The stories go, the ghosts are those of the people that remained, some maybe ghosts of miners who died on the island. There are also stories that a good number of people working on the island were not Japanese but migrant workers from Korea and China.
One episode I saw, showed ghost hunters visiting the island and they were freaked out. Anyone else hear anything else?
