As well as playing bass in Misandao, Mark Oi (pictured) has been taking photographs of his friends in Beijing’s punk and skinhead scene for almost a decade. As you might be able to tell, he’s a huge fan of Skins photographer Gavin Watson. And to thank us for sending him a copy of Gavin’s new book, Mark sent us a selection of his favourite photos from over the years.

Punk was an Uproar when it first came about. Its a lot harder to be “punk” in a place like China than it is in the U.K. or U.S. The anti-government message could get you killed there, instead of just pissing your parents off.

i agree with Tommy. being a Punk in China is like being a swinger in Saudi Arabia.

well tommy is wrong. it’s not that tough, the punk scene there is too small to really piss the government off. it hard to be a punk there for a lot of reasons, but its not like they are on the run from the law. if it were i doubt they would be so into making films, publishing books, and taking photos.
