The Black Lips have just released the video for "Veni Vidi Vici," that woozy jam about holy world war on Good Bad Not Evil. Shot on a Super 8 camera they found in a thrift store, it follows the band shaking maracas in a cemetery and busting shapes in infinity mirrors. We asked Cole a couple of questions about the video…
Vice: What was the inspiration?
Cole: To make a pop
culture observation of the ruffled feathers of the trifilin asses of
the religious extreme. I don’t know how well we conveyed that since we’re
just kids horsing around in our hometown cemetery. But it’s not supposed to
be real political, just symbolic fun.
Any stories from the making of the video?
Yeah. We found out that the
director, Edward Tegethoff, used to be in an awesome punk band called Freedom Puff where they would eat live crickets on stage. You should
check out Benjamin Smoke’s records. He was the front man for that band. He later died of AIDS but managed to put all of that horror and pain on record. It’s pretty amazing.
This is your best one yet. Are you happy with it?
I don’t know
if it’s the best video yet. I am certainly pleased with it because I felt
that the film quality actually matches our sound and aesthetic for the
fist time.
