Besides ripping on and/or pitying them, can’t say we’ve ever done much for the citizens of San Francisco. Oh, or enjoining them to move somewhere less awful. Anyways, this all changes tonight. In the spirit of Halloween reconciliation, we and EA games are throwing a party for their new zombie game, Hellgate: London, in Soma, just a stone’s throw away from the original. SAN FRANCISCO - HALLOWEEN HELLGATE PARTY, TONIGHT
NEW YORK - DEVIL MUSIC
Hey, what’re you up to tonight? Sitting in a bar in half a costume? That’s pretty cool… Look, this is going to sound a little gay at first, but hear us out. They are showing Nosferatu tonight at the Village East Cinema with a live score, and before you go rolling your eyes back over to the bar, it’s not some symphony nerds painstakingly recreating the original accompaniment for a bunch of pie-eyed Upper West Side self-congratulators like they always do at the fucking Cloisters or wherever. It is these guys, Devil Music Ensemble, who’ve written their own soundtrack with guitar, electric violin, and drums which sounds somewhere in the middle ground between Emperor and the Castlevania music. They’re showing it twice, at 7:30 and 9:30, and here’s all the info if you’re interested.
OLD BLUE LAST - BACK ON POINT
No prizes for guessing what colour we painted The Old Blue Last. The outside needed a bit of a facelift. Inside, we’ve also stepped it up by booking a whole bunch of bands that will blow your mind, or something like that. SIMIAN DO THE SAME, BUT NOT AS WELL
We’re not sure why dance digitizers Simian Mobile Disco decided to remake the "Hustler" video. The original, made by the brilliant Saam Farahmand, is one of our all time faves, a video that we’ll be watching with nostalgic glee when we’re old and gray. Well, anyway, they made another one which is also chock full o’ hot girls, but more in that Maxim hot way. This is fine, but the heavy handed critique of consumption is something we could do without. Now all we’ve got is a gaggle of fake tits trying to teach us about Horkheimer and Adorno’s Dialectic of Enlightenment.

Tonight is this thing at the MOMA called “Modern Mondays.” They show movies by challenging directors–e.g. “life-changing” OR “walk out now now now” bad. Afterwards the director answers questions, and then after that, something happens, but it is a surprise. Really, they asked us not to tell. This week they have two movies by Ernie Gehr. Not sure what to say about him. One movie is a lot of footage he shot in glass elevators in San Francisco. The other is two alternating shots of a hallway: close, far; close, far; close, far; close, far, repeat. We thought it was supposed to evoke the feeling of motion. We thought then, maybe, it was supposed to get you to think about why two alternating shots of a hallway would = motion. But my cinema studies professor said, “Wrong.” Gerh will be there tonight, so I guess we can ask him. Ah whatever. THERE IS A SURPRISE WE CAN’T TELL YOU! Try this thing tonight. It’s at 7 PM.
