Downloading video, music and other media is a pain in the ass and by the time MASK (or a movie that’s still in theaters like Talladega Nights) is finally fully loaded on to your computer you have about 3k left to play it. What someone needs to invent is an independent, external hard drive that can download everything you could possibly think of and do it without bothering you until it’s ready. Wouldn’t that be awesome?
Well, it has been done on earth as it is in heaven.
And it is awesome.
The ASUS WL-700gE replaces everything in your house but the furniture (and food I guess). You don’t need to rent or buy movies, or CDs, or records or porn or anything like that ever again. Why even have a DVD player or a DVR or Tivo anymore? Ha ha advertisers. You’re obsolete. All you have to do is download everything on to this little white box, hook your computer up to some speakers, video adapter it to your TV if need be and you’re off. You have a CD / movie collection the size of Michael Jackson’s and it takes up about as much room as a little kid’s shoe.
The ASUS WL-700gE is essentially a combination of a wireless router/gateway and a media-downloading machine. The best part of this motherfucker is the fact that it comes with an embedded BitTorrent client and download manager. The torrent downloading system is like that infomercial “set it and forget it”; you queue up your downloads and let the client do its thing. Simply paste in the URL of the download you’re after, specify the appropriate protocol (HTTP, FTP or BT) and press Download. The best places to get video are here and here and music is best sucked out of here. While you sleep it’s downloading every episode of 60 Minutes that ever was, the entire Phil Spector anthology, and more lesbian orgy porn than any wanker could possibly handle. All incoming files are stored in the Download Folder and patiently await your attention.
The ASUS comes with a 160 GB built-in hard drive but this hard drive can be exchanged for a much larger 500 GB drive if you want to go on vacation or something. Your warranty will become void when you go up to the 500 but who cares? Soon you’ll have every thing in the world. If they allowed these things in prison going to jail would be a blast.
Are you getting this? No computers need to be running to keep the downloads active – the router handles all communication natively. It also has a built in network iTunes client, so it’ll show up as an iTunes client to your PCs.
That’s it. $260 to never spend money on eyes / ears – based things ever again. All you have to do is buy the unit from any major hardware retailer, plug it in via USB, install the software and you’re set. The installation wizards will take you through the setup process and the help files will solve any downloading issues you may have.

Wow, way to go for Asus! How much did they pay to get editorial advertisments in the Vice blog? Ah, the sweet smell of product placement… it lingers!

Yeah, there’s no room to download anything on my TRS-80. I wish I could run Windows 3.1 too, but oh well.

Why would I spend 260$ on something my computer can do already?
You sound like those pushy pakis on Canal st.

Great! Now no filmmaker, artist, or musician can ever make a living off of their work, because no one will ever be willing to pay for any form of entertainment that isn’t live! Awesome. Maybe I’ll figure out a way to bootleg Vice Magazine and take out the advertisements and provide that as a free service. Yay capitalism.

Figure out a way? They offer the whole issue as a PDF for free online. Anyone on earth can print that out (without ads) and give it to whoever they want. Don’t you get it? Vice is free.

160 GB not big enough. My porn collection is bigger than that.
Here’s what I do for all my media. Get a thing from WeibeTech called a Drive Dock. You can then use hard drives without cases as removable media.

The ASUS is actually a really hot item. If you’ve ever downloaded a torrent, you know it goes like this:
You find a torrent, download it, wait and when it’s finished you watch it and then delete it. Then you have to repeat the whole process. All of this makes you confined to your desk sitting in front of a retina burning screen.
With the ASUS you don’t have to go back to the torrent search again for months. Also, the fact that it shows up on my iTunes means I have the most amazing iTunes library at my disposal.
You guys have way too much time on your hands. Maybe it’s the fact that you spend hours on your pc downloading porn clips that you don’t mind wasting hours getting torrents too.

yea you can download torrents on yer computer but it’s a pain in the ass. i have 2 major problems that my ASUS solves:
1) i have to leave my computer on which decreases the life expectancy of my computer.
2) adding an extra hard drive to your computer sucks a giant nut. It involves opening up the computer and connecting a maze of wires that only David Bowie from the Labyrinth would understand. Or you could get an external hard drive but then you come to the above problem.
ASUS rocks. All those who disagree voluntarily suck cock.

newsbin is a better place for movies, apps, music though. And slsknet.org is the best for music still and you don’t need a bitch ass referral to participate. Also, torrentz is a meta engine that searches lots of torrent servers including these two so you have more options.
Vice isn’t the most tech savvy…

I haven’t used newsbin but who wants to pay $35 dollars for something torrents do for free? Soulseek is okay if you are a loser who can’t get Oink. HAHA! I can’t stop ripping on your comment. You aren’t the most tech savvy…

Way too small. With terabyte size availability why would I go with 160 gb. I fill 160gb in a month. The simple key is to use a DVD burner and burn the movies. Then, guess what?, you can pop them in your standard DVD player. Wow!

Uh, newsbin doesn’t cost shit. It’s called getting a pirate copy you chode. I’ve never paid for any program ever, but maybe you don’t know about free software yet. newsbin gets 2mbps speeds so have fun with your torrents. Also, if you missed it the first time I included even some info to help those who were only able to figure out torrents. Please read my entire comment more thoroughly next time and avoid being a douche as well.

I get it. Helio works for Vice or at least sleeps with someone there.
I need to clarify for girls like this. To use the “torrentz” search function to browse categories you have to know how to use the advanced search feature and a simple operator. For example, if you would like to look at action movies you can type movies+action. I know it’s a bit more old school, and maybe neophyte users who haven’t used google before such as helio might struggle. Sorry helio! Maybe that will help you out.

Am I the only person who likes to actually own things?
I remember when my old computer died, I was most upset that itunes had disapeard, and that the 5 kajillion or so albums on there had gone.
I like to have the CD/LP/DVD, I like to have the hard copy.
More than anything, having to go out and buy the hard copy, and use a CD player/record deck/DVD player to use them, all of which gets me away from the computer.

I wish that they would make a phone that would do this. That way you could surf/locate/set downloads while on the road. Then on top of that make the phone bluetooth so you could beam your shit to your playback media of preference when you gets home and use the phone as a remote…I am so smrt.

Thanks for the link to oink. Why would you link to a site no one can join unless you know someone who’s a member? Do you think it makes you cool that you’re a member and we aren’t?
That site is basically a bunch of glorified warez kiddies. Some of my mates used to belong to warez crews like that but then they turned 16 and it decided to get a life.
Sad dude, very sad.
Oh by the way the ASUS WL-700gE is something my Mum would buy if she was into torrents. Useless crap.
P.S. you smell.
