Weed Diamond sees the sun where there’s none

When I think of Denver, Colorado, I think of lumberjack shirts, the Rocky Mountains and John Denver (though he was born in Roswell). One thing I certainly didn’t expect was that it would inspire the kind of sunstroke sounds that have come from Denver resident Tim Perry under his fucking awful moniker Weed Diamond. It’s great that you smoke loads of dope and everything, but unless you’re Afro Man, you look like a dick telling everyone. Fortunately the music’s fucking great.

Transparent - Music Go Music, Girls, Radiant Dragon

Hey Vice readers, this is what we’re listening to.

MUSIC GO MUSIC

967581283_lIn a better world Phil Spector would be producing Abba. He would stumble into the studio, tell Bjorn to go fuck himself and thrust a gun down Anni-Frid’s mouth until Agnetha hit the high-notes. The result would be something not a million miles away from ‘Light of Love’ by LA trio Music Go Music. The mysterious Gala Bell’s organic voice is what binds the synth pop with the dancefloor and ends up producing some futro-disco that most A&Rs are freaking out about. They have three singles out on Secretly Canadian which traverse the epic to the ELO.

Titus Andronicus, Arch M and Your Twenties

Did you see the ‘New Bands 2009′ lists? If the idiots who voted for them knew anything they’d have voted for these three bands. Oh well who cares, the industry can have Frankmusik if that’s what they really want, we’re happy with MP3s from these dudes.

Titus Andronicus

The ghosts of a bloody Shakespearean tragedy or some French existential author are never far from the unflinchingly aggressive Titus Andronicus. These guys played their first UK show at the Old Blue Last a while back and it was intense. Led to battle by the raging bull of Patrick Stickles they smashed the place up, somehow making our sense of impending doom seem like a glorious crusade. Three minutes of low fuzzy vocals on ‘No Future’ burn like a fuse before finally erupting into life with the familiar concrete melodies. Everyone’s got a hard-on for this band, you can see why, they make you want to rage. And read more books. But mostly rage.
