In the basement of Brooklyn’s Academy Records, Caleb Braaten and Keegan are silkscreening and assembling the limited-edition versions of the new Pink Noise and Nice Face LPs. I am there too. I’m not sure what I was expecting from the Sacred Bones headquarters but I didn’t expect it to look like a serial murderer’s torture garage. The stairs to the basement are creaky and shitty and the basement is full of so much goddamn shit, you have no idea. Mostly old children’s toys. The Sacred Bones production nook is hidden back in the dirt. Caleb and Keegan glue and screenprint while listening to records on a crummy little portable record player and discussing whatever it is that interests them. Read more »

KISSES HAVE MADE US A MIXTAPE
The blogs are going crazy about Kisses, the dreamy project from travel writer and Princeton frontman Jesse Kivel. But without labouring the point, what the fuck is it with ripping off the Swedes at the moment? Is it just because they’re so genial, they verge on being pussies? Jesse from Kisses sent us over a mixtape which you can listen to below, complete with (minimal) liner notes, plus the Kisses track “Bermuda”.
TEENGIRL FANTASY MADE US A MIXTAPE (EVEN THOUGH WE’RE MOANING DICKS)
Ages ago, back when they were supporting The Horrors at the Electric Ballroom, I asked Teengirl Fantasy to do a mixtape for us. They said yes, and then nothing happened. Fortunately the taskmasters at Merok kept kicking them up the arse about it and yesterday it arrived. And it’s great, so now I just feel like a dick for ever moaning about it being late. Sometimes being in charge of a seriously significant music blog can really go to your head. Read more »
CLOUD NOTHINGS MIXTAPE
You might have read about Cloud Nothings on various vaguely reputable music sites recently. Known to his mum as Dylan Baldi, this 18-year-old from Cleveland, Ohio used to record under the name Cat Killer. He makes brilliantly snotty, fuzzy pop songs filled with enough hooks and great lyrics to justify this current maelstrom of hype. Being the fairly excellent dude he is, Dylan’s taken some time to make us a great mixtape, which you can listen to below. While you’re down there, check out the excellent Cloud Nothings track “Morgan”. Read more »
A FIST IN THE FACE OF GOD - SALUTE MIXTAPE
Not only was Mr. Tom Swine of Salute kind enough to give us an interview ahead of their free show this weekend at the Old Blue Last, but he has made us a mix too. And you know what? It’s pretty damn good too. He will be DJing on Saturday also, so this is like a precursor to that, in a way. Tracklist is as follows.
Julio Bashmore has made us a mixtape
Some lazy nim called Julio Bashmore the new Joy Orbison (are we really there already?), but he isn’t. His real name is Matt, and he’s a young producer from Bristol who is doing his best to make his city’s basements hear something they haven’t wanted to hear for about ten years: house music. He made us a mixtape, which is nice. Read more »
YETI LANE HAVE MADE A MIXTAPE FOR VICE
Yeti Lane are a trio from Paris. Apparently their name is a combination of an album by Amon Düül II and “Penny Lane”. Their debut album (out on January 25 on Sonic Cathedral) is similarly broad, dipping into Pavement, The Flaming Lips, Grandaddy, Yo La Tengo, Can, New Order and Kraftwerk. Frontman Ben Pleng has done this mix exclusively for Vice, and he talks us through it below. Read more »
NEW YORK BLONDES
Remember we told you about Blondes from NYC a while ago? And remember how fucking good the MP3 we gave away was? Yeah, well you should. We like the band so much we got in touch and asked them to make us a mixtape, and, like the gracious beat bastards I’m assuming they are, they agreed. And it’s really good. Click through to download the Purple-Glazed Mix by Blondes. Read more »
A Fist in the Face of God - Fenriz presents… Trapped Under Vice Vol. II
Following the success of the first in the Trapped Under Vice mix series by resident Fist in the Face of God mix-maker Fenriz back in July, we have the highly anticipated second installment of the series, imaginatively titled Trapped Under Vice Vol. II. In stark contrast to the style of the first volume, I wanted a style I know virtually nothing about. So I asked Fenriz for a collection of the stuff that had inspired the people who had inspired him to make music. Anyways, here is the intro from the man himself. Take it away, Fenriz.
