This is more like it. Dame Blackman sing-talks her way through a litany of heart-wrenching pathos and regret that even Marc Almond would be ashamed to keep a straight face throughout. Probably the campest single since Elaine Page and Barbara Dickson power-moaned their way to the top of the charts, and at two minutes and nine seconds, sounds suspiciously truncated. Perhaps the intended finale was so overwrought that all involved dissolved in a pool of tears.

In a better world Phil Spector would be producing Abba. He would stumble into the studio, tell Bjorn to go fuck himself and thrust a gun down Anni-Frid’s mouth until Agnetha hit the high-notes. The result would be something not a million miles away from ‘Light of Love’ by LA trio Music Go Music. The mysterious Gala Bell’s organic voice is what binds the synth pop with the dancefloor and ends up producing some futro-disco that most A&Rs are freaking out about. They have three singles out on Secretly Canadian which traverse the epic to the ELO.
