Remember we told you about Blondes from NYC a while ago? And remember how fucking good the MP3 we gave away was? Yeah, well you should. We like the band so much we got in touch and asked them to make us a mixtape, and, like the gracious beat bastards I’m assuming they are, they agreed. And it’s really good. THIS IS COLDWAVE
About two years ago my good friend Al O’Connell (aka Alalal, who we told you about here) played me some minimal synth tracks that had an immediate and considerable effect on me. They contained analogue synths that sounded sharp and icy instead of the warm squelchy noises that a lot of people use them for; Junos instead of MS20s, backed by the most primitive drum machines and oblique otherworldly vocals. Cosmic Slop have made us a mixtape
You know Dalston? That place that all the estate agents know is totally happening right now? Well next time you go, don’t get off the bus when you see Bardens, instead head a bit further north up to Stoke Newington and you’ll find Cosmic Slop. The Slop is an amazing free night run by people with impeccable collections of extremely rare 60s psych, 70s glam, Bollywood funk, 50s rock’n'roll and messed-up electro and post-punk noise. Plus, afterwards you can go and break into the world’s creepiest cemetery over the road and look for the ghost of Daniel Defoe. They’ve made us this amazing mixtape of cosmic glory. High Places and Soft Circle made us a mixtape
Two of the fruitiest and loopiest explorers of the oddest corners of sound, High Places and Soft Circle, have buddied up to put a split 12″ out on No Age guy Dean Spunt’s Post Present Medium Records. You can cop the record right now, and having had it on repeat for the last week, we can testify to its restorative powers and general greatness. To celebrate this cosmic union, Hisham Bharoocha and Rob and Mary from High Places got together and made a mixtape just for us. The selection is in turns surprising, inspired and, unsurprisingly, inspiring. THANKS GUYS!
Rodaidh minimix
Cocadisco, our favourite night for exquisite and refined dance euphoria, returns for a summer party at Corsica Studios this month, with a rather fantastic line-up of DJs, including Vitalic, Mark Moore, The Horrors and Louis Enchante. For full information, go here. Tickets can be bought here (it’s recommended you book in advance).
One half of Cocadisco, Rodaidh McDonald, has made a mix of stuff you can expect to be played on the night, including his own productions and a forthcoming release by Publicist on his label, Touching Music. Read more »
The Horrors’ American mixtape
Back in March, The Horrors‘ Tom and Rhys, aka Spider and the Flies, made a pair of mixtapes for us called Up and Down. You all loved Up, but I think you were a little darked-out by Down. Since then, The Horrors brought out their amazing second record, and so they’ve been on tour in America, scuttling through record shops, buying out the vinyl history of a nation. To go with the story of the tour, Tom’s made us a mix spanning the divine discoveries from Chicago to Albuquerque. Click through to read and listen to what travelling around America is like. Welcome to the Suicide Weekend
Hey! It’s Friday! Why not kill that excitement and anticipation of good times by listening to an hour of songs about Jesus, death, executions, homesickness, death, the Devil, missed opportunities, and a bit more Jesus? You may think us Vice guys go out every night and party with hot chicks, but actually I spent last night in my room in my pants with two wads of toilet paper up my nose to combat oppressive hay fever while making this mix of blues and spiritual music with a dash of calypso. Pretty racy imagery, I know. Anyway, this mix is so Friday. Read more »
Rose Quartz - Hype Williams ‘mixtape’
Ever had one of those dreams where you’re grinding your teeth and they’re falling out and coming loose? I had this shitty one once where there was dental floss stitched into the roof of my mouth and around my teeth. Totally gross yeah, but I’m not sure if it tops the one that Karen from London weirdos Hype Williams had last Thursday.
Magistrates made us a mixtape
Indie isn’t so happy any more. All those T4 invites have dried up and Alice Dellal isn’t returning Maximo Park’s texts anymore. Slightly too late to catch the Blockaiserfranz indie megabucks are Magistrates, but that doesn’t mean they suck, it just means they’re broke like indie kids of old were. They’ve made us a mixtape, which you can get for free. So show your gratitude by going and buying their single or whatever – it’s like leaving a pound in a busker’s hat, only these busker wear sequins and their music makes you want to get knee-deep in someone’s tights. Click through to hear. Read more »
Mixtape from the centre of the brain
If there is any part of you that cares about the underground electronic experiments of London’s digital alchemists, then you’ll remember when VICE and XXJFG first threw Brassica into your life. If not, then you get to say hello to this bedroom Merlin through the amazing mixtape he’s just made for us. Click through to hear it.
