Some lazy nim called Julio Bashmore the new Joy Orbison (are we really there already?), but he isn’t. His real name is Matt, and he’s a young producer from Bristol who is doing his best to make his city’s basements hear something they haven’t wanted to hear for about ten years: house music. He made us a mixtape, which is nice.
Vice: Hey man, how busy are you at the moment?
Julio Bashmore: I’ve been mental busy this week. I’m doing a remix for Delphic. They keep saying “more vocals”.
Everyone likes vocals. What are you working on after that?
I’m going to get this remix out of the way, and then a Mary Anne Hobbs thing. Then it’s back on the production horse for some stuff for Dirtybird; Claude VonStroke said he’s keen for me to put out some more.
That’s nice. What’s his real name, by the way?
Barclay Crenshaw.
What? That’s way better than Claude VonStroke.
He doesn’t really need another name, does he?
Maybe when he becomes older and wiser he will release an acoustic album under Barclay Crenshaw.
Really? I think Barclay Crenshaw sounds pretty tough. He loves his D&B; maybe if he makes some, he’ll use it.
And write a song called “The Bullet” that has gunshots for hi hats.
I can only hope so. I might actually try that myself.
Why do dance music producers like yourself and Barclay Crenshaw insist on using mainland European names instead of your own? Is it to make you seem more sexy and smelly?
Maybe. Actually, at a night I played this week there was this good-looking Spanish dude with really long hair and a finely cut beard; I think everyone thought he was Julio Bashmore.
He sounds like a cool guy.
I made a point of not speaking to him.
Hyetal is a Bristolian with a real dance name.
We met just the other night, actually. We’ve been talking about doing a collaboration. He might well be my favourite producer in Bristol right now.
Do you get much support as a house producer in Bristol?
Well, there’s not many house producers here, so most of my support comes from London and overseas. But the dubstep community here is open-minded and there are a few who are into what I’m doing.
Julio Bashmore’s EP “The Bongo Chronicles” is out on Dirtybird here. And you can listen to Julio B’s exclusive mix for us below.

[...] I want to do more than talk tees on my blog so I’ll use this space to put a spotlight on artists from various fields that I’m feeling. Today’s Man Of The Moment is Julio Bashmore. This young Bristolian has been making serious waves the last couple of months and more and more dj’s from the dubstep, funky and house scenes have been battering the sounds of young Julio. I first heard his Um Bongo’s Revenge track last year and then ran into his World Peace tune on the Claude Von Stroke Fact mix and they both blew me away, he’s also had a track, titled The Moth featured on Fabric’s excellent Elevator Music compilation alongside other new school heroes Untold and Martyn and recently Vice magazine jumped the bandwagon and had Mr Bashmore make them a mixtape. He now did a wicked remix for Delphic’s epic Halcyon that’s been doing the rounds too. The hype is well deserved to say the least, as I have yet to hear a bad tune from the man. If you don’t know what i’m on about and if you haven’t heard his offerings I suggest you listen to the Fact mini mix he did a while ago as most essential Bashmore choons are included and it’s a nice little mix to boot.
