So, if you weren’t really bored of hearing about Wavves, you’d probably be wondering what Nathan Williams was doing before all the hype, backlash, stage breakdowns and fights with Black Lips that followed. Well, he was playing in a pretty good “tropical psych-folk trio” called Fantastic Magic and he dressed like like he played in Devendra Banhart’s backing band. They played a bunch of shows, released a CD-R, a tape and a 7″, and then split up. So what happened to the other members of the group? Well, two of them, specifically Matthew and Sundar, became Heavy Hawaii.
Imagine if Ariel Pink concentrated his nostalgia on the late 60s rather than the early – mid 80s and you might have some idea of what Heavy Hawaii sound like. It’s very Beach Boys, a little Syd Barrett, but mainly pretty fucking good. I’m guessing they will release something soon. For now, listen below.

I like it. But they need a decent producer. I’m not saying that because I have some phobia of lo-fi/amateurish recordings. It’s just that this sounds (from the crappy stream) like a decent pop song that wants to happen. And that’s one of my favourite things in the world. Produce it better, but still keep them guessing.
