A Fist in the Face of God - Von

Christians, look away now. This week’s post sees A Fist in the Face of God undertake maybe its most unholy recipient yet: Von. Read more »

Secret Garden Party - Hippie takeover

Secret Garden Party is a bit like Neverland – it is for people who spit in the face of adulthood and lubricate their rebirth to a childlike state by getting doped up, dressing like lunatic perverts and pretending life is fun. So it’s more MJ Neverland than JM Barrie Neverland.

Pickled fish and the Crepes - Let’s move to Sweden

crepes1

I’m considering a move to Sweden. It’s got awesome public services, impressively clean streets, myriad different kinds of delicious pickled fish and a left-leaning progressive government. Okay, they have a bit of a weird situation with buying booze (you can only get wine and spirits from state-run alcohol shops that are open no later than 6 PM), but it’s good to be organised about getting drunk.     Read more »

Three Cheers - Colours

colours1

In 2007, Bournemouth was apparently the happiest place in Britain. However, by 2008, it had fallen to number 152. While trying to find out what had happened to make those twelve months so cataclysmic for the town, I stumbled across Colours. They are Leon Diaper and Jon Lawrence, who together are an awesome dream-pop band stuck in a moody town. Leon answered a few questions, plus sent us an MP3 so that you can have a listen. Read more »

Buenvenidos a Mi Ami

1015

Mi Ami are one of the best live bands I’ve seen this year. I saw them manage to make a whole room of hipsters, fat people who’d grown beards so that people at gigs will call them ‘beardy’ rather than ‘fat’, and muso blog bastards dance violently to the visceral rhythms of their live show. It looked like shit, but it was still an achievement. You could totally tell that two of them used to be in legendary chaotic punk band Black Eyes, especially when right at the start of the gig frontman Daniel ran straight into the crowd spilling lots of other people’s beer, knocking people over and treading on the Pitchfork vibes. Drugs, with love from Black Lips

The video for Black Lips‘ new single, “Drugs”, is a warm family film, full of love and laughs. After you’ve watched it, you should really track down the split seven-inch released on Vice Records on August 2. The other side is a cover of the band’s last single, “I’ll Be With You”, by Faris Badwan from the Horrors and Cherish Kaya (ex-Ipso Facto). Collectively they are called Lumina, and this is their first release.

PAUL CHILD
WORKING MAN 2009

Wales Records

The miners’ strike was a terrible time and, yes, Thatcher was and is a total bitch, but even that still doesn’t excuse this wretched ballad made even worse by this aging choirboy. Listen to The Mekons’ “Abernant 84/5″ for a truly great song about this torrid part of British history.

Vice Presents: Mariachi El Bronx

101-copy

Vice Presents returns on August 22nd, what do you think I should wear? Shall I do the smart guy buttoned-up, mid-twenties thing? Should I pull a slack, Mexican skater, baseball hat move? Or go for the whole Mariachi shebang everyone’s busting these days? Clearly, that’s the best option you doughnut, because on August 22nd, the world’s best punk band not called Fucked Up, The Bronx, will be performing TWO sets. That’s at least one more than you or I deserve. As well as The Bronx’s headline set, a traditional mix of blood and hope, (and the only UK one they’re playing outside of festivals this year), they’ll be taking the stage beforehand as Mariachi El Bronx. In case you didn’t hear, as well as recording third LP Bronx III the band have recorded a Mariachi record. In case you’re in a state of confusion about this somewhat bizarre move, it’s no novelty record. Click here for tickets. I’ll let you know about support acts tomorrow.

AUGUSTINE DROWN

Cosmic nodding for hours

earfless

Here we are again, huh? Supersonic is so close now that you can smell it. You can feel the crackle in the air. Today we talk to Earthless, who play endless, riffing, stoned-out psyche with just the right amount of rock and roll to keep you gripped no matter how long they noodle on for. At Roadburn last year they were due to play to about three people on whatever stage not many people go to, but ended up pretty much headlining the whole shebang after Isis pulled out and in the process converted thousands of Dutch guys to their infinite jams.

A Fist in the Face of God - Nekromantheon

nekromantheon

A week has passed since the Mayan black metal prophecies of Xibalba, and today I have more ancient mythology-themed metal for you. This time of the Greek kind, courtesy of Norway’s Nekromantheon.
