このような砂嵐は突然やってくる。砂嵐が最も多い夏は、シャマルと呼ばれる強い風がトルコから何日間、又は何週間も吹き荒れる。中東で最も細かくホコリっぽいイラクの砂は、しっかりと密閉した窓の隙間にも入り込み、家の中で数センチも積もる。面白情報：バビロニア人はその昔、この砂嵐を邪悪な鳥、ズーの仕業としていたのだが、この鳥は後にパズズという犬と鳥を合体させた悪魔へと進化していった。そしてなんと、『エクソシスト』のリーガン・マクニールに取り憑いたのもこの悪魔。面白いだろ?　クリストフ・バンゲルトの本『イラク』（パワーハウス/2007年秋発売）より。
