ZOOM RHYTHMTRAK RT-123
Questa è la mia drum machine economica preferita. Puoi programmarti i pattern non solo della batteria ma anche del basso e della tastiera. Molti pezzi degli Yeah Yeah Yeahs sono fatti con questi suoni di tastiera, tipo “Reach” e “Maps”. Mi piace usare l’ RT-123 anche con un pedale di distorsione o con un ampli scrauso per ottenere un suono più sporco. Tutti pensano sia una chitarra. Ha ha.

ROLAND SPACE ECHO RE-201
In realtà questo è un altro modello- un chorus version 301- ma è comunque
un delay analogico. Preferisco usare il RE-201, senza il chorus, come pre-ampli/compressore con un lieve riverbero. Lo Space Echo consiste in una bobina con tre testine che girano più lente mentre registri, producendo una echo o un delay. I vecchi dischi dub erano all’inizio fatti usando solo questi strumenti. Io al mio ho attaccato un interruttore per la massa, perché i voltaggi differenti fuori dagli U.S.A possono interferire con le uscite e farlo suonare malissimo.
HONDA SOUND WORKS OCTAVE FUZZ PEDAL
Questo è un prototipo fatto per me da un’azienda di Tokio che fa pedali a mano veramente curati. Fedele al nome che porta, produce un suono che riesce a modellare la tonalità di una chitarra da “Lay Down Sally” in “Whole Lotta Rosie.”
BOSS LOOP STATION RC-20
La pubblicità di questo pedale recita “play with yourself,” ma non mi piace usarlo in quel modo. Puoi registrare un suono e risuonarlo all’infinito in loop, poi registrare su quello, poi ri-registrarci sopra e così via. Per me, è un campionatore. Mi piace registrare ed immagazzinare suoni che riproduco live. L’ RC-20 è in grado di campionare un suono per cinque minuti. Per esempio, posso campionarmi tutta la strumentale di “Fight the Power”, schiacciare un bottone col piede, e cacciarci sopra ruvidi assoli di chitarra.
DIGITECH HYPER PHASE
I pedali phaser di solito li usano i Goths o gli indie-nerds. Col loro fratello, il Flanger, i phasers hanno reso la maggior parte della musica ’80 inascoltabile, dopo essere stati resuscitati dalla psichedelica ’60-’70. Il phase si ottiene dividendo un segnale in due e facendo scivolare leggermente uno dei due suoni. Più lo fai scivolare, più ottieni il famoso “whooooeeeeesh”. Il pedale funziona attraverso frequenze differenti e variazioni di suono, che ricollegano l’effetto al suono originale ma con velocità diverse rendendo il tutto meno armonico. O una cosa del genere. E’ molto cool ma, per favore, usatelo con prudenza. Può diventare irritante.
ELECTRO-HARMONIX P.O.G.
Fra i pedali nuovi, il mio preferito. E’ un generatore di ottave polifoniche, il che significa che puoi ricreare l’input sonoro con diversi registri, o ottave appunto. Posso fare una nota, e farla suonare come una cazzo di orchestra. Diversamente da altri pedali, che sono hanno un leggero ritardo in uscita, questo è velocissimo. Nel nuovo disco YYY è dappertutto. Sebbene sto pedale abbia un anno, Jack White mi ha battuto usandolo nel primo singolo del nuovo White Stripes. Anche i suoni feedback passano divinamente attraverso il POG.
LINE 6 DL4 DELAY MODULATOR
Giù le mani: il migliore pedale delay. Nel caso non lo sapeste, delay vuol dire eco. Suona una nota e continuerà a ripetersi, e ripetersi e ripetersi. Il DL4, comunemente conosciuto come il pedale verde, riproduce digitalmente qualsiasi tipo di effetto, dall’analogico al digitale. Funziona anche come piccolo campionatore, ma diversamente dall’RC-20, non immagazzina il suono dopo che l’hai spento. Lo uso all’inizio di “Maps” per far suonare quella nota per tutta la canzone. Dal vivo, il pedale verde è quello che fa ottenere il maggior apprezzamento ai chitarristi dell’intera prima fila, che resta così ai miei piedi PER TUTTO IL FOTTUTO CONCERTO.

Who cares what the guy uses. He gets a unique sound that is his own with his mix of cheap lofi effects and boutique/vintage. He didn't even mention here that he uses a Japanese Strat and a Hot Rod Deluxe 'cause that would really get you gear snobs going. Personally, I think it's a good sound, and even though YYY is not my favorite band, Nick's guitar setup has influenced the way I think about live guitar, because it is creative. The most creative thing he does (or used to do) to get his big live sound and to compensate for not having a bass player, he close mics his Hot Rod Deluxe on stage fo

I'd recommend the Boss DD-6 over the Line 6 DL4 if you are looking for a good delay pedal.

The DL4 is a "modeler" which means it's a digital pedal that has a knob that says "analog" and "Tube echo" and it supposedly emulates these sounds, that's just lame. If you want analog, buy analog, that's what internet auctions are for. You don't get a vintage sound by dialing into a digital device that says "1970's-era Fender amplifier" you have to play the REAL THING.

Also, the DL4 has a million features, but unless you want to spend all your time bent over fiddling w/ knobs you're probably only going to use a handful.

The DD-6, on the other hand, has one 'sound' to it and is also more compact, which saves space on your pedal board. People say digital is too 'cold' sounding, but the DD-6 is supposed to be digital, it's not trying (and failing) to sound analog like the DL4.

Also, for looping pedals, if you want a step up from the Boss Loopstation, the Echoplex is the king, but it's also a thousand bucks, so the Boss or the Digitech Jam Man are good substitutes. You can also check out the boomerang phrase sampler, but that's pretty much been made obsolete by the Boss/Digitech pedals.
