Quando due ragazzine quattordicenni si sono suicidate gettandosi dal 17mo piano di un palazzo di Parigi, lasciando solo un biglietto: “Non ne vale la pena”, ho deciso di passare una settimana nel bel mezzo del furore mediatico che si stava scatenando intorno al caso. Come prima cosa ho seguito i reporter a Cité Montmousseau a Ivry-sur-Seine, un sobborgo di Parigi. Ai piedi del palazzo dal quale si erano uccise ho visto una piccola montagna di fiori, un mare di poesie e note d’addio scritte a mano, ma nemmeno uno dei gioielli gotici, crocefissi e macchie di sangue descritti da tutti i giornali. Inoltre, Ivry-sur-Seine si è rivelato un paesino tranquillo e sonnolento, lontano anni luce dal clichè del “ghetto suburbano” usato dalle tv francesi. Il giorno della loro morte Marion e Virginie, le due ragazze, hanno bigiato scuola per andare a casa di un loro amico, Benjamin, “dove fumavano droghe e ascoltavano heavy metal” (Associated Press). Marion e Virginie hanno poi chiesto a Benjamin e Julien, un’altro amico, di aspettare nel salotto mentre preparavano una “sorpresa”. Una delle due ragazze ha chiamato i ragazzi, dicendo, “Ok, adesso entrate.” Ben ha aperto la porta. Marion e Virginie erano in piedi sul davanzale della finestra, con le mani legate l’un l’altra. Hanno sorriso. E si sono buttate. Per via del sensazionalismo buonista e opportunista dei giornalisti francesi, che si sono affrettati ad incolpare bersagli ovvi come Marilyn Manson e la marijuana, i dettagli del funerale sono stati tenuti nell’ombra. Ma non è stato difficile scoprirli. Dopo dieci giorni di tempesta mediatica, mi aspettavo molta più gente al funerale di Virginie. Invece erano presenti solo familiari (43, secondo gli organizzatori), una ventina di compagni di scuola e un centinaio di persone di Ivry e Vitry, dieci poliziotti in borghese, ma nessun giornalista. Nel suo sermone il prete ha chiesto perdono per una Chiesa Cattolica che non seppellisce suicidi da secoli. Poi ha annunciato che il cimitero sarebbe stato chiuso al pubblico per la cerimonia. Un’ora dopo mi sono avviato verso la tomba di Virginie, dopo essermi nascosto per evitare di incrociare i familiari stretti. Solo quando ho notato l’orsacchiotto sulla tomba mi sono finalmente reso conto di quanto fossero giovani. E ho provato una sensazione di disgusto ad essere lì. E non ho provato null’altro. Cosa ho scoperto di Marion e Virginie dalla lettura di tutti quei documenti, e seguendo gli altri giornalisti? Di sicuro non ho capito perchè si sono uccise. Non c’erano spiegazioni.
