In seguito all’uragano Katrina, il cantante degli Eyehategod Michael Williams è scomparso e si temeva il peggio. L’appartamento che divideva con la sua ragazza Alicia Stillman su St Andrew’s nel Lower Garden District è andato completamente distrutto. Dopo cinque giorni di tentativi di contattarlo falliti, gli altri del gruppo, Gary Mader e Jimmy Bower han cominciato a cagarsi addosso. Alla fine l’han trovato, in galera, accusato di spaccio e rapina.

Gary Mader: Vivo sopra al Dixie’s Taverne (Il CBGB di New Orleans) su Canal Street vicino al quartiere francese, la parte della città più colpita dall’uragano. Per fortuna io e mia moglie ce ne siamo accorti prima che le cose precipitassero. Mentre ce ne andavamo il cielo era già grigio e il vento stava acquistando potenza , quindi sapevamo che stavamo facendo la cosa giusta. Non abbiamo molti più beni personali di quelli che siamo riusciti a infilare nella nostra piccola e merdosa automobile. Una volta fuori pericolo, io e Jimmy abbiamo incominciato a chiamare in giro per sapere se qualcuno aveva sentito Mike e Alicia. Nessuno. Tememmo il peggio. Poi dopo un paio di giorni di sclero, capimmo che in qualche modo Mike e Alicia erano sopravvissuti. Questo perchè capimmo che se n’erano andati con calma senza portarsi assolutamente nulla dei loro beni materiali se non i vestiti che indossavano.

Jimmy Bower: Mike e Alicia mi han detto che attorno a loro
era il terrore. Cadaveri, incendi, spari, stupri. Semplicemente gli esseri umani in una situazione di sopravvivenza. Era triste, molto triste.

Gary: Una volta che chi poteva se n’era andato, in città esplose il caos senza aiuti visibili. E così è presto diventato “ognuno per se”. Era tipo, aiutati o muori. I più poveri, senza risorse, son stati lasciati morire (almeno fino all’arrivo degli aiuti federali due mesi più tardi). A Mike e Alicia, in realtà, è capitato di imbattersi in una farmacia mentre veniva rapinata..

Jimmy: Gli sbirri han detto a Mike di prendersi ciò che gli serviva. Loro stessi stavano saccheggiando. Penso che cercassero di aiutare la gente.

Gary: cos’è poi succeso a Mike e Alicia non è facile da spiegare a causa dei carichi pendenti. Penso che abbiano semplicemente fatto ciò che gli ha detto la polizia e si siano presi qualcosa dalla farmacia. Ora, a causa dello stato di emergenza loro avevano una sorta di permesso speciale per potersi appropriare di quei medicinali. Comunque la storia degli sbirri che rubavano è niente. Ci son tante di quelle cose successe a N.O. che non ci diranno mai. Come ad esempio quel poliziotto che ha sparato a un ragazzo che aveva stuprato una bimba di 7 anni al Superdome per evitare che la folla inferocita lo facesse a pezzi? Non verrà mai fuori. Così senza macchina ne telefono, Mike e Alicia se ne sono andati in una cazzo di cittadina di campagna, Morgan City, dove i soldi che avevano gli sarebbero bastati per una notte in motel. L’errore che han fatto è che Alicia ha deciso di prendere dei farmaci che avevano rubato e ha cercato di venderli a una ragazzina mai vista prima.

Il 6 settembre il Morgan City news pubblica il seguente articolo “La polizia ha arrestato Mike Wiliams e Alicia Stillman, entrambi 39enni di St Andrew’s Street a N.O. per possesso e spaccio di stupefacenti.
“Gli ufficiali dichiarano che la Stillman stava provando a vendere sostanze illegali a una giovane all’altezza del Motel in cui alloggiava, al 182 della statale. E’ stata trovata in possesso di tre pillole e portata al carcere di Morgan City.

“La polizia di Morgan City ha poi trovato Williams nella camera del motel con un vasto assortimanto di sostanze. Jim Christy, capo della polizia, ha detto che son state trovate diverse bottigliette di sciroppo contenenti codeina che Williams sostiene di aver preso da una farmacia rapinata a Wallsgreen, N.O. Entrambi I sospettati restano in carcere in attesa di processo.”

Michael Williams: mi trovo al carcere di St. Mary Parish. Ingiustamente, ovviamente, per presunto possesso di sostanze che abbiamo preso a N.O. Tutte le accuse sono naturalmente false. Disto anni luce dallo spaccio. Son stati una serie di eventi sfortunati. A causa del processo, non ho immediati piani per il futuro se non quello di tornare on the road con gli EHG.

La polizia di New Orleans? Una barzelletta. Ho sentito che la situazione si è calmata solo con l’arrivo dell’esercito. Il capo della polizia si è dimesso e più di 200 poliziotti sono indagati. Tipico di New Orleans. Per non parlare di quelli che hanno disertato o son spariti. Penso che la mia casa abbia preso fuoco. Non son sicuro al 100% essendo qui, ma se non è bruciata è stata rapinata. Comunque abbiamo perso tutto.

Jimmy: Mike dice che sta benino in galera. Dice che, rispetto alla sua ultima casa, è un hotel. Stiamo dicendo a tutti di mandargli esclusivamente lettere. Non vogliamo che passi altri casini. Chiediamo a tutti di non nominare la band e di non spedirgli libri sulle droghe. Stiamo cercando i soldi per dargli un adeguata assistenza legale.

Gary: oggi son tornato nel mio quartiere, facendo lo slalom fra I posti di blocco militari. Al Dixie taverne, il livello dell’acqua era di sei piedi. Il bar è rovinato. Non voglio andarmene da qui perchè usavamo il salone per provare e se ce ne andiamo, dobbiamo trovare un posto a pagamento, cosa che non abbiamo mai fatto. Voglio tornare a suonare la mia chitarra.

In città vige ancora la legge marziale: coprifuoco, berretti rossi e la famosa polizia di New Orleans per le strade. La polizia ha già avuto abbastanza cattiva pubblicità per cui tralascio. Dico solo che c’erano anche dei bravi ragazzi che han fatto del loro meglio per proteggere la città. Senza comandi, senza comunicazione e con 200 di loro che son spariti. L’esercito ha fatto il proprio dovere quand’è arrivato. Dovevano arrivare prima ma i nostri officiali locali erano troppo orgogliosi per ammettere che avevano perso il controllo e degli innocenti ci han rimesso la vita. Una volta che la sicurezza è tornata in città , le cose son sfuggite di mano nell’altro senso. I militari hanno sequestrato armi legalmente posseduto, preso acqua e cibo, sequestrato illegalmente generatori e vietato l’accesso stampa a certe aree, cosicchè il resto del mondo non potesse vedere la quantità di morti.

Jimmy: quando Mike esce e torniamo a suonare, scrivo la più rude, più brutta e più degradante merda che posso scrivere. Il nostro governatore è un idiota, così come il nostro presidente. Abbiamo un terzo del petrolio nazionale qui. Credevo si comportassero meglio. New Orleans adesso è terzo mondo. Avete dei medicinali?

Selling drugs to minors is not good, but self-preservation has proven to be an excellent motivator; and if selling a few bottles of prescription drugs is going to get you some cash, so be it. Dont think you can objectively judge what you would do in a similar situation.

well normally i'd say if you were trying to sell drugs to a minor you deserve to be in prison. but in this case it was a matter of survival. if you had no money or car & were in a hellish situation like that....what would you do? i, for one, would do anything i thought i could to try & get some money together to get the fuck out of there. that includes stealing drugs if i thought there was a chance i could sell them on the street to get money for a hotel room or whatever. now trying to sell to a minor is a different story, and generally trying to sell to ANYONE you dont know is really quite stupid. but hey.....ya gotta do what ya gotta do.
