BY ANGELA STRASSHEIM
Angela has wanted to work with dead bodies since she was nine years old––she just wasn't sure how because she wanted to be an artist too. It's hard enough to succeed in just one of those fields, so she must be a robot or something because she ended up not only graduating from Yale's storied photography program (la-di-da), but also being an autopsy photographer for four boroughs of New York City (not Staten Island, but they don't count since you have to take a boat to get there). She takes pictures of autopsies for eight hours a day, every single day. That's an average of 10 dead people chopped up in front of her daily. That's what she does while you're busy being a "freelance stylist" or a "creative director." Angela also makes art, mostly based on crime scenes she witnessed while working as a forensic photographer in Dade County, Florida. She has a million awesome and disgusting stories, and we almost barfed five times while she explained her excellent photos to us.
This is what they use to cut open skulls in autopsy rooms. The sound of it is really disturbing. This one still has some hair on it.

These are wall drawings by a boy who got decapitated 10 feet away from this spot. He got his head stuck in a freight elevator. It was his dad's warehouse.

This is a re-creation of a drug deal gone bad that I shot on the job in Miami. They had all been bound at the hands and feet, then gagged with duct tape and shot in the head execution-style.

This is a re-creation of how I would actually photograph a crime scene on the job. I based this on a news story about a couple walking on some railroad tracks. They were attacked by a few guys. He was knocked out, and she was gang-raped and beaten. He came to and called the cops on his cell, and I think she was actually rescued.

This doctor did illegal abortions in his basement from the 1930s until the 70s. He saved all of them in jars. When he died, his wife wanted them gone, and she called the forensics department where I work. It was a big day for us.

My friends took over this old screenprinting shop, then they discovered a hidden sex room in the back. This is exactly how they found it. Note the duct-tape ball gags and the penis pump.

This is a re-creation of a story I saw when I worked in Miami as a forensic photographer. The makeup was done meticulously from autopsy photos—I even re-created the ant activity on her breast.

I re-created a suicide I'd photographed earlier that year at the A&A building, a famous structure in New Haven. I was hoping to schedule it for when a parade was going by, but that didn't work out.

Does art imitate life or does life imitate art? Death is fascinating because in the end thats where we all end.
With your work, you help bring justice for these unfortinate victems of life. You took a interest. And I think that when we die, thats what we all want, is someone to notice the loss.

I'm not sure if those who are bitching about the "dead" bodies are smart enough to read some bio's on Angela, but if you were you would know that these photographs are recreation. And for those of you who need a further definition that means that they people are not really dead. I find your work a real inspiration. I am a photography student who is going into forensics. Your work helps me defend my idea for my senior show, which is to create still lives of crime scenes to help portray the seriousness of crimes against women. Thank you very much for having the guts to stand up for your art. And one more comment to those who say your work isn't art. Here's an assignment from the Professors within the Art school I attend. Define art! You can't! That's the point.

Ok, this girl has put what she feels to be art on the internet. Personally I think it's fantastic and I love it. It's not shocking, just thought provoking and as for giving the story away miss lah de dah, She hasn't, she is basically explaining a small portion of background. The big questions are yet to be answered, why? who? when? What happened after?. It's a shame that your art can't be criticised by someone with taste more often. BRAVO :oD

Do you think maybe she isn't trying to take these photographs as artwork to be displayed in a gallery? Maybe they are instructional pieces for law enforcement to use during training? As such they would need to be incredibly detailed to provide clues for up and coming investigators. Some are simply documents to be pondered about the depravations that everyone should be aware. A healthy sense of fear about these things should always be in the back of our minds. The real location of fear and violent death is often not in some exotic location but in some bland place that we normally would not suspect.

I find the photos boring and dull. Violence and the underbelly of the world does not shock me. There is so much of it that I am very desensitized. Congrats on making a bunch of boring unshocking photos. If your attempt was to show how boring death and mutilation are then great job.

you are imitating a look that was coined by logistics, no frills forensic photography. you succeed in duplicating this look, but what insight are you offering to your subject matter by simply recreating situations and capturing them in the same way they were originally captured? your work depends far too much on shock value, personally i would much rather see the "real" original photos. interesting stuff tho.

Most of this stuff is pretty cliche. The fact that you have to put a caption explaining the nasty stuff in the photos just highlights the fact that the photography itself is fairly uninspired.

"And here's where a boy was decapitated by a freight elevator... How do I know, you ask? Because... I WAS THAT BOY" *flicks flashlight on and off*

Compositionally, these are pretty good pictures. A couple of the shots could've been a little less empty. The color and grain convey an idea of hopelessness, which I think you intnended. While I wasn't too hot on a few of them (they seemed a little contrived), generally these are interesting photographs.

By far, the bone saw photo is the best.

I believe that when she did "recreations" of crime scenes that those would be for use in trial of the alleged perpetrators.

I.e. it is not as if she spent her free time and probably her office's resources in order to stage mock ups of crimes.

It's funny that you go to Yale, cause that school sucks a dick. I know first hand. Part of the reason is the student body and how they haven't a clue of anything that goes on about them. The only good thing in New Haven is RUDY'S. Burn the rest of New Haven, except maybe BAR on Sunday nights, but even that is starting to suck my nads. Get out of the North East all together cause it is where everyone is flocking to. Fuck it I'm moving to FLA, stay the hell away with your creepy "staged" pictures.

There is a certain detached viewpoint about the pictures, which I would guess comes from having to look at creepy stuff all day long. The staged ones are cool, and I could see those in a gallery, large format and well framed. I say keep working.

okay, explain why these are good pictures. they exist to satisfy some kind of spectacle a lot of contempary art strives for (credson, wall) but in the end its just spectacle. and this is a pretty boring spectacle. this is art for arts sake at its worst. am i supposed to be shocked by these pictures? if I am, so what? that doesnt make it art. i like anna colletes stuff (artist prolly went to school with her)...at least shes documenting something interesting in her stuff, this...this is fox news.

get your money back from yale. these pictures are worthless. i cant imagine what little talent for communication you have. here you are, photographing crime scenes for a living, and for art kicks all you do is recreate them? whats the point? i dont care how you do your job, the article explaining it does more for that than the photos. whats more interesting is how it effects you, but we get none of that thru these photos because you have no imagination. you deserve these pinheads who give you credit. go do a show in their frat house.
