Here’s another band that’s going to be touring every student town in the country for the next two years. The Ivories.
If you’ve heard of Interpol and you trace their music back through time you come to Joy Division and then you come to Siouxsie & The Banshees. That’s kind of what The Ivories sound like. The singer Helena Gee runs the Release The Bats club night in Leeds and is one of those people who’s so good-looking and talented that going to university to better herself was never an option. Look, not all of us can be like that, don’t stress about it.
Vice: So why didn’t you go to university?
Helena: I was already doing what I wanted to do. Being in a band was always my dream since I was eleven. My dad made my sister play guitar but she didn’t get into it so I stole it. Hypothetically I should be quite good at playing it because I’m 19 but... I’m not.
A lot of people reading this are going to university for the first time and will probably be thinking about starting a band. What would you say to them?
Well you can be in a band and go to uni at the same time but at some point you’re going to have to choose between the two. The main thing is, if your heart’s not in it just don’t bother with it. I’ve never understood people who do things when there heart’s not in it.
