BORDERLINE BIGOTSMexico Tells Immigrants: “No Way, José”WORDS AND PHOTOS BY LUIS AGUILAR Each year hundreds of thousands of optimistic South and Central Americans travel north to see whether things might be less crappy for them in the United States. The problem is they have to cross Mexico to get there. And Mexico is riddled with inhospitable local authorities and migrants who are as eager as they are possessive of the American passage. Both groups treat Southern transients the same way US authorities treat illegal Mexican aliens: like human refuse. I wanted to witness and document just how bad things are for South and Central Americans, so I caught up with a group of Guatemalan chapines and Honduran catrachos in Chiapas, near Mexico’s southern border, as they made their way up to the States. It’s a prime spot to observe. In broad daylight you can witness legions prancing over the increasingly defined line that divides one country from another.
I soon saw that immigrants have two options northward: riding a bus or hopping a train. Either way, Mexicans with machine guns and shitty attitudes await them.

2. Foreigners will NOT have the right to vote, no matter how long they are here.
3. Foreigners will NEVER be able to hold political office.
4. Foreigners will not be a burden to the taxpayers. No welfare, no food stamps, no health care, nor any other government assistance programs.
5. Foreigners can invest in this country, but it must be an amount equal to 40,000 times the daily minimum wage.
6. If foreigners do come and want to buy land that will be okay, BUT options will be restricted. You are not allowed to own waterfront property. That property is reserved for citizens naturally born into this country.
7. Foreigners may not protest; no demonstrations, no waving a foreign flag, no political organizing, no "bad-mouthing" our president or his policies. If you do you will be sent home.
8. If you do come to this country illegally, you will be hunted down and sent straight to jail.
The above laws happen to be the immigration laws of MEXICO | | Anonymous, on Jun 18, 2009 wrote: this is a crazy story, but even more crazy is the comment below, everywhere has immigrants moving to it, but the majority arent the tired poor as you put it, they are more than willing to do the jobs you wouldnt want. | | Anonymous, on Jun 18, 2009 wrote: Hypocritical, to say the least. Seeing as how Mexico encourages its poor and uneducated to go through the same kind of ordeasl to come to the US. A greater effort is needed to help these countries better themselves: open up markets, raise education standards, etc. America literally can’t take all the "tired, poor" on Earth, although there are some who are stupid enough to wish that. | |
