THE EPICLY LATER’D PAGE

Active Erica, who every skater has wet
dreams about these days.

Hey everyone, here’s my page again. A few months ago, I wrote about how I hate dumb skate kids. I read the comments online and people were pretty bummed at what I said, but I have a feeling that the people who were bummed haven’t been to a skate park lately. Anyway, I now need all your expert ethical opinions about whether or not I should show or talk about drinking and drugs on my show. It seems like most of my guests fall into two categories: complete drunk asses and reformed complete drunk asses. So I am asking you, loyal commenters, for advice: Do I show the truth and talk about pros getting coked out, smoking crack, shooting heroin, etc. because it’s the truth? Or do I avoid the subject because I don’t want the aforementioned impressionable dumb kids to become junkies? I’ll lurk the commentsfeel free to also call me a hipster fag or whatever else as well. I got thick skin these days. Anyway... here are some unrelated photos from Braydon’s shoe-release party that happened in January.

It attracts weirdos, non-conformists, artists, thinkers, outsiders. Chances are some of the kids who watch your show will end up taking drugs and some will not, but your show won’t be directly responsible, nor will skateboarding culture - those kids will be attracted to drugs regardless for the same reason they are attracted to skateboarding: danger, kicks, rebellion, the fun of being on the fringes of society, addictive personality, an escape from their responsibilities etc.
Think about it Patrick, when you were a little grom there were brawlers, punks, criminals, junkies, sex offenders, murderers and suicides within the pro skateboard community and that was half the reason why it was so much more fun than regular sports - and though I can’t really comment about your personal life, it is obvious you haven’t exactly thrown your life away just because you came up in this environment. Even if kids are dumb enough to follow role models they can still pick and choose - eg skate like Gator, dress like Greco but live your life like Templeton, Vallelly etc. | | Anonymous, on Mar 20, 2009 wrote: I feel bad for pro ho’s. | | Anonymous, on Mar 18, 2009 wrote: yes i wanna see live drug taking please. you should try get mariano off the waggon for future episodes | | Anonymous, on Mar 11, 2009 wrote: I think you are over estimating how influential your blogshow is.
if the drugs are relevant ... show it... if they aren’t ...don’t..
and that shit you said about the little skate dudes...
you said it yourself... ’’spanky and those guys don’t mind them’’ but you do ?! uhh... who cares what you think... you aren’t the pro... and you are getting a bit big for your cockroach styled boots.
the only reason your show is mildly successful is because you have access to interesting people. i think you need to realise that. its NOT YOU!! | | Anonymous, on Mar 11, 2009 wrote: Skater crews actually do funny shit, stoner crews don’t do shit, and it’s funny. | | Anonymous, on Mar 11, 2009 wrote: You should talk about it, but about how you know, often enough a skate crew becomes a stoner crew, who have a good time, but theres no skating anymore, and so really, you just lost your relevance to skating, and any future hobbies. It happens a lot, it sucks | | Anonymous, on Mar 11, 2009 wrote: Yeah go for it, you have no responsibilitys to anyone else, it’d be a good article... you hipster fag ;) | | Anonymous, on Mar 9, 2009 wrote: yes | | Anonymous, on Mar 6, 2009 wrote: who cares, you have no responsibility for some dipshit kid and his/her shananegans, if they were gonna do drugs/drink/whatever they were gonna do it regardless of your coloumn, so keep makin em so i can keep watchin em | | Anonymous, on Mar 3, 2009 wrote: Being that your show is on Vice TV, I always thought it was strange that there was next-to-no mention of drugs. The omission never bothered me, but I thought part of Vice’s whole thing was to be honest in a way the rest of the media isn’t. I read an interview with Larry Clark once talking about Tulsa, and saying, ’all this stuff was going on, and it pissed me off that no one talked about it, and it was swept under the rug’. Granted, hard drug use is a lot more glamorous/mainstream now than then...
I understand the hesitation about impressionable young kids. Maybe you can do a disclaimer at the start?
Regardless, your show is awesome. | | Anonymous, on Mar 2, 2009 wrote: show it all | | Anonymous, on Mar 2, 2009 wrote: dude! drugs fuck up so many skaters as it is? that dude is right about the whiskey video! fuck that shit! you’ll kill our dumb ass’s! | | Anonymous, on Feb 28, 2009 wrote: I don’t think you should totally omit the drug use that is going on behind these guys, Patrick. I mean everyone pretty much already knows, and those who don’t aren’t really your target audience. So, for the sake of keeping the show legit, I would say just talk about the drugs and skanks and whatever, because why not? What are you going to turn a kid to drugs because some pro is into it? That isn’t how this shit works. Kids aren’t quite as impressionable by media as people seem to think they are.
But really, what it comes down to is keeping your show honest. Just say whatever is relevant to the story, and often partying and drugs and whatever else is really fucking relevant. | | Anonymous, on Feb 27, 2009 wrote: braydon looks like he’s having fun even when he hides behind a angel of death hangover mask. i swear he could make disembowelment into a county fair cake walk and still have the energy to change a couple tires. | | Anonymous, on Feb 27, 2009 wrote: who’s mom in the emerica sweatshirt? i can’t party around moms, even the "cool" ones. i’ve tried for years now. no dice on that front. | |

that is all | | Anonymous, on Feb 25, 2009 wrote: Just be honest man. Drugs fuck some people up, but there’s also a lot of people who takes drugs, especially when they’re young, and then go on to have rich, fulfilling lives. Until this country is more open about the realities of drug use, good and bad, we’re going to be stuck in this war on drugs bullshit. | | Anonymous, on Feb 24, 2009 wrote: If you consider yourself a documentary filmmaker, then yes. If you consider yourself a skate video maker, then no. It’s no secret that lots of these guys use drugs. You know what? A lot of my friends that have never touched a skate board do drugs too. Unless it’s affecting their skating, I don’t see the point of including it in skate videos other than the controversy factor. | | Anonymous, on Feb 24, 2009 wrote: The kids aren’t that dumb. you shouldn’t censor yourself just because you think the kids will do the same thing. and even if they gonna do drugs and stuff, well... that’s life.your objective should be to do the most interesting show possible, and don’t think about other people’s opinion. it’s time to bring some maturity to skateboarding. skate isn’t just for kids anymore. show everything, show skaters doin drugs, show them with hookers, show them doin nothing, because that’s waht life is about, don’t censor yourself just because some people may not approove
congrats on your show, from portugal | | Anonymous, on Feb 24, 2009 wrote: When I was 10 and 11 I used to buy copies of Big Brother at 7/11. The guys working there just thought it was a skate mag - which it was, I guess. This was when it had tits in it and talked about coke and weed all the time. Big Brother was fucking great, but I didn’t start doing all the shit that I saw in the mag. Now I’m 23, I graduated from college, and I still love skating.
Kids find this shit no matter what, one way or another. You work for fucking VICE. | | Anonymous, on Feb 24, 2009 wrote: Wow

Try to research the subject of drug and alcohol use & abuse a bit before you just start editing together various clips. You are obviously very knowledgeable about "skateboarding". Educate yourself on the subject of substance use & abuse as well. You may be knowledgeable about it already in which case, go for it.
Interview as wide a range of subjects as possible. I’d be interested to hear what the pros who use drugs & alcohol have to say just as much as those who don’t.
Personally, I’m curious about the dynamic between skaters who choose not to partake in drinking or drug use but still have to tour, travel and compete with the skaters who do drink and use drugs.
For such an emotionally charged series it’s advisable to be as unbiased as possible. Approach it in a journalistic manner. I thought it was great when you interviewed the Doctor in regards to Andrew Reynolds’ OCD. I’m sure there are people other than skaters who would have very interesting things to say on the subject of drug and alcohol use.
I look forward to the series!

I’m sick in bed with a cold and I just started watching your series. I’ve been watching them non-stop all day and I think they’re amazing!
