LISA CRYSTAL CARVER

Lisa has a band called Suckdog (well, technically, it’s more like a live opera of blood and nudity than an actual band) and is the creator of the hands-down best and most unique zine of the 1990s, Rollerderby. There are virginity-loss stories, sex polls, grooming tips, interviews with her friends and family, gossip about her hillbilly neighbors, articles like “Why I Want to Rape Olivia Newton-John,” and oodles of sexually explicit fan letters from really… intense people. It’s all very revealing, and the stuff it reveals is so weird! Lisa is a freak magnet and a gifted writer—a combination that spells excitement. Most recently, she launched an anti-Generation X movement called Generation L (for “Lisa”), whose manifesto calls for better grooming and manners in today’s youth. It includes proclamations such as “All women wear sparkly eye-shadow” and “No whining!” We hope it catches on! In this issue, she explores the oddly sexual appeal of Lisa Loeb.

RICHARD WANG

Richard is a med student, but he apparently had enough free time to start a magazine on the world wide web—a “webzine” if you will—called Blair (www.blairmag.com). I think it’s really weird to read a magazine on a computer screen, but welcome to the future, I guess! Anyway, Richard and his cohorts are hilarious. The premiere issue has features on Towa Tei from Deee-Lite, a possibly fake interview with Kim, Julie, and Yoshimi from Free Kitten, and odes to Alien Workshop skateboards, Parker Posey, and the BeDazzler. The most shocking feature, however, is a letter from Margie at Sassy magazine breaking the news that Sassy just got bought out by some shitty publishing company in LA and the whole staff got booted! Oh no, this is terrible!

CHRISTINA KELLY

Christina is the editor of Sassy magazine and our favorite writer there too. Or I guess we should say, “was,” since Richard Wang just broke the news of Sassy’s demise to us [see above]. Needless to say, we are heartbroken. When we asked Christina to comment on the news, she hung up on us (oops), so we’re figuring it’s still too soon. But we hope this won’t be the last we hear from her. You know what she should do? She should make her own magazine and call it Christina. We would read the hell out of that. In the meantime, please enjoy Christina’s ode to the best show on TV right now, My So-Called Life. PS: That’s her far-right in the photo with Jane Pratt and former “Sassiest Boy in America” Ian Svenonius. He used to sing for the DC-based Nation of Ulysses and now he is in the maybe even better Cupid Car Club.

JANELLE HESSIG

Janelle is the lead singer of the all-girl band the Tourettes. CMJ referred to her as “quite possibly the most unintelligible punk vocalist of all time”—a high honor! She also draws funny cartoons and puts out a zine called Tales of Blarg. She is a bona fide punk-rock celebrity and has had two songs written about her, one by Born Against and one by Bratmobile that kind of makes fun of the one by Born Against. The Born Against song goes like this: “Janelle is awfully bright/For a fresh girl of 18/She knows all the punk-rock sites/And does a cool fanzine/Janelle can be so tactful/A quality that’s often rare/But if you’re talking tactful/You’re talking dyed-pink hair/And she’s not afraid of anything/And she won’t get old and boring […] Janelle/Janelle/She’s so swell/And she doesn’t smell/Like most of her pals.” What else do you need to know? Oh yeah, that’s the Green Day guy in the photo with her, circa 1990, if you care. We don’t.

CHLOË SEVIGNY

Get used to the name Chloë Sevigny because you’re going to be hearing a lot of it! Officially dubbed the new It Girl by Jay McInerney in the New Yorker, our cover girl, Chloë, seems to have her finger in every cool pie in New York City, from Liquid Sky to Sassy to Sonic Youth to X-Girl to, um, we don’t even know what else because we’re not as cool as her. At 20 years old, she’s already a fashion icon and now she’s trying her hand at acting, starring in a film that’s coming out next year called Kids. It was written by a 20-year-old skater kid named Harmony Korine and directed by photographer Larry Clark and it’s about a day in the life of a motley crew of ragtag skaters and teenagers romping around New York City. Sounds like it will be adorable!

GREG MARINOVICH

Greg here is a member of the “Bang-Bang Club,” the only group of photojournalists with testes large enough to properly cover the lunacy that’s happening right now in the run-up to South Africa’s 1994 presidential election. Define “properly,” you say. Well, earlier this year he was shot while covering a firefight outside Johannesberg. Is that commitment enough for you? For his troubles and talents, Greg’s work has been featured everywhere from Time to Newsweek to the New York Times. He’s been handed oodles of awards, including a Leica Award for Excellence and, in ’91, the granddaddy of them all, a Pulitzer Prize for Spot News Reporting. For this issue, Greg sent us some pretty mortifying photographs from the front lines of South Africa’s budding civil war.
