PHOTOS BY DAVID GILLANDERS
INTERVIEW BY JAMES KNIGHT
David Gillanders grew up in Glasgow and like most Glaswegians he soon found himself immersed in the sport known as “fighting”. Because he was smart, David decided to do his fighting in the relative safety of a boxing gym, rather than down the back alley behind Barrowlands. Inspired by the black and white boxing posters that covered the walls of his local gym, David began taking photos of the fighters. This soon grew into a general interest in photography (mostly of people fighting) and as he grew older he developed the stark, black and white style that’s become his trademark.
Over the years, David has shot “fighters” in Glasgow, Russia, Odessa, Malawi and Egypt documenting the lives of the overlooked and marginalised because he says he can’t help but do anything else. For this project David photographed Ukranian street orphans, many of whom will never get within spitting distance of their 20th birthday.
