DOS & DON'TS

Going to Europe and seeing people under 30 who don’t look like they’re wearing drugstore GG Allin costumes is such an ocular relief it’s like shooting valium into your eyes. Comments/Enlarge | See all

Taking in an exchange student seems like a bad decision when he walks in on you in the bathroom or wants to learn about baseball. But come on, how good is the part when you and your friends teach him that the American way to answer the phone is "Hello fancy lady?" or that it's customary to present your host with a 10-inch swath from the bottom of each garment after a dinner party? Pretty good. Comments/Enlarge | See all

VICE FASHION - ISLAND KIDS

Stephen McKinnon: “I’m the only rocker on the island. I’m in a band called the Lack Pack with my dad. My favourite band is AC/DC. I want to leave the island one day and be in a famous rock band. I have my own style and I’m developing it all the time.” (Stephen reviews the bands later on in the magazine).

Sarah Louise MacNeil: “The Glasgow Herald did a bad article about us, totally dissing Barra. They said we all drink underage. I suppose some of us do but not everybody. After the article came we nearly had the youth club taken off us because they thought we were all drinking.”

Danielle MacLeod: “I’ve lived here since I was a week old. It’s a brilliant place to live. I’m going to bring my kids up here. There’s not really enough to do but it’s not like there’s was a lot to do in the start and they took it away.”

Arron MacArthur: “The bus shelter’s a good place to go. We have competitions to see how many people we can fit in there sometimes. We got about 25 in there once.”

James Davidson: “Aye, I don’t mind it here. It’s a bit boring.”

Karen Taylor & Donnie MacNeil: “Barra is very small and quiet. I get bored quite a lot of the time. I wish there were places to go and things to see. Here there’s nothing apart from going to the bus stop or the youth club that we have at the community hall.”

Katie Boyd: “Living in a small community has made me care more about people. I’m studying radiotherapy at university in Glasgow because I want to help people with cancer.”

Arron MacArthur: “Aye there’s not a lot to do here but it’s not so bad. I don’t want to live here for the whole of my life though. Wouldn’t mind leaving so I can get a job on the mainland someday.”

Jordan Page: “I’m going to sea to join the Merchant Navy. My Gen (grandfather) did that. In the MN there’s lots of different jobs to do. If you’re a deck officer you can stand on the deck and boss everybody about.”
