KEMBRA PFAHLER is more punk rock than anyone we know. She’s an artist, designer, rock star, and like a million more awesome things. Her scary rock band, the Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black, will be playing a series of shows at Deitch Projects in February 2006. They will also have a new vinyl picture disc out around the same time on Beautiful Records.

Dress by Kembra / Thigh-high boots: I think these are from Snaz75. I changed the laces to give them that classic Chanel look. I hate thick, cloddy heels. It’s really important to me to maintain the stiletto heel. It’s like a weapon. I believe you should be able to poke someone’s eye out with your heel. And I like that they’re difficult to wear, I think it makes you look like you really mean business.

Kembra tells us about some of her favorite stuff:
CUSTOMIZED LEG WARMERS BY KEMBRA
We wear these in the band a lot. I’m really into putting buttons on everything right now.

FISHER-PRICE TAPE RECORDER
We use this in band practice when we’re working on new songs. It’s surprisingly loud.

CONWAY'S UNDIES
I have no patience for stores. I get discombobulated and nauseous, especially in large stores. However, I am a big Conway’s shopper. I get all my undies there.

CUSTOM-MADE AC/DC LEATHER PANTS BY LEGIA
These are pants that almost put you in a bad mood to wear them because they’re so painful and difficult to wear. I love them.
VINTAGE MUUMUU

I have a pretty big Hawaiian muumuu collection. I also collect Girl Scout and Brownie uniforms, but I no longer wear them because after 40 you end up looking like an insane, overly medicated HBO actress.
JACKET BY SAMOA
This is one of my favorite pieces by my guitar player, Samoa. He is my favorite high-fashion designer. For awhile, in the 90s, he had a boutique/kiosk in the back of the Pink Pony Café called Candy Coated Evil. He’s not making fashion right now though.
SNAZ75 BOOTS
These are my casual boots. They come from a cheesy website, a Hollywood Boulevard type of shoe store called Snaz75. To me, this is the paradigm of a boot. This is exactly what a boot for a human foot should look like. Like in the dictionary, for the word “boot,” they would just have this picture.

BELL BRACELET
This is a low-tech percussion instrument that we wear in the Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black. I researched many different-size bells; it’s amazing the different tones that come out of different-size bells. We rehearse with these a lot because there are a lot of idiosyncrasies to the way you hold your hands and the way you shake your wrists to get certain sounds.
