DOS & DON'TS

What is this, the Lockhorns? Even if, taking the high road here, your husband's defective penis isn't at least partially the result of your own middleaged bloatification, parading it through the airport can't be helping. Comments/Enlarge | See all

When did CBGB get taken over by roided-out rock ’n’ roll tourists? It’s become like Extreme Planet Hollywood, and I fear for its future if it carries on like this. Comments/Enlarge | See all

DOOMSDAY METAL

NIFELHEIM
Nifelheim are planning a mini tour through Finland on January 19 to 21, and a live performance in London on February 4. There is also a split with Brazilian Vulcano, which will be “fucking grim,” and a full-length album is planned for release on June 6, 2006.

BEST OF THE BEAST
This is a really rare promo box. And apart from being really rare, it’s also drop dead gorgeous. It comes as a box that you open, and the inside is made as a pop-up. There’s a promo pamphlet and the Best of the Beast video, which was never released.

JAPANESE PROMO
Uhm, this is just a really rare single. It’s with “Genghis Khan” and has a good cover. It’s only been released in Japan.

2 MINUTES TO MIDNIGHT 12"
I just have to mention that I haven’t been choosing stuff super carefully here, I really just flipped through a crate and picked up whatever caught my eye. So this version of “2 Minutes to Midnight” has “Rime of the Ancient Mariner” instead of “Rainbow’s Gold” on the flipside, which is a real treat. It’s over 13 minutes long.

B. BAYLEY FOOTIE TEE
This is the now the old singer of Iron Maiden, Blaze Bayley’s personal, one of a kind football T-shirt. He wore it during a football tournament that preceded the release of Virtual XI. They always bring football teams on their tours. If I would choose a team it would be West Ham, like Steve Harris, but I have to confess I’m not all that into football.

EDDIE TEE
This is another T-shirt that was given to me by Blaze Bayley personally. Iron Maiden released a video game, Ed Hunted. But before that, they made another game, that didn’t turn out good enough. This t-shirt is from that first game.

TWILIGHT ZONE
I think I have all pressings ever released of this album. Here you can see some of the differences between different pressings. I have about 15 pressings of the Run to the Hills single too.

Nidverk
Nidverk’s Ante tells us they will be producing their new material themselves, so “the production won’t be as good.” Which, to us, sounds extremely promising. Their demo Nattens Hälsning can be purchased at www.blackcave.se. Also, Black Mark tells us a Remember Quorthon box is in the making, and that they’re working on it as much and often as they can. Like Satyr, we too will be lighting 13 candles and await the second coming of darkness.

FLAMING ABSINTH
During one scene in the film, Gaahl says he’s supportive of the church burnings, that we’ll see a lot more of it in the future, and that it won’t stop until Christianity is gone. He gave me a bottle of flaming absinth as a gift.

CRUCIFIED BOY AT GORGOROTH SHOW
There’s this intense moment in the film where I ask Gaahl what his inspiration and drive for making music comes from. There’s a full eight-second pause where he stares at me, and then he says, with emphasis, “Satan.” I ask him what Satan represents to him, there’s a five-second pause and he says “Freedom.” Usually when we screen the film there’s a lot of nervous laughter in the audience during that scene. But when we showed it in Norway, with Gaahl present, there was substantially less laughter. Afterwards he came up to us and said he felt we had captured the essence of what he was trying to say.

Metal: A Headbanger’s Journey
The DVD release of “Metal: A Headbanger’s Journey” will contain a documentary packed with nothing but True Norwegian Black Metal as additional material. It will feature interviews with everyone from scientists to scenesters, and will be available at www.metalhistory.com from May/June.

NIDVERK TEE
Apart from the demo and this T-shirt, we’ve been featured on a compilation called Listen to Your Inner Voice, and we’re going to have two songs on another South American compilation—it comes with a magazine so there will be an interview too. It’s going to be in Spanish.

IN MEMORY OF QUORTHON TEE
Bathory are old favourites. We just got this T-shirt in our web store, BlackCave.se. Black Cave is also our own record label. We’re set to release a band called Promania. It’s fast Black Metal. We found them when they sent us their demo and asked if we could sell it in the shop. It sounded really good so we signed them instead. They’re only like 16 to 20 years old, so it’s really promising.

REHEARSAL ROOM STUFF
We rehearse outside of Malmberget where ABF (The Workers’ Education Union) has an old space they keep for bands. It’s good because the rent is cheap, €5 a year, but we can’t stay there after 11 at night.
ANTE, NIDVERK
