Brownsville Skate Clinic
I arrived in Brownsville and cruised down Grant avenue, crossed the highway, and entered Robert Venable Park, named after a fallen transit officer. Fortunately, all nine skateboards were still in the skate mobile after a full week of touring distant parks ranging from Fort Green, to Red Hook, and now further into Brooklyn, Brownsville. We have met the halfway point of the two week long Open Road: “Learn to Skateboard” program.
We run a free skate clinic, providing kids of all ages with skateboard rentals, protective gear, and one on one lessons. People of all ages, especially the young ones have been quick to abandon the basketball courts and help us convert the parks into daily skating arenas.
At Robert Venable, they now have the opportunity of learning to skate the previously desolate miniature skate park the park has to offer.
Speakers provided by the New York Parks Department blair soul music as the kids learn how to shred amongst experienced rippers such as Zoo York’s Dave Willis, Acapulco Gold’s Leo Gutman, and a variety of other experienced veteran instructors of the program.
Local skater Michael Rivas, pictured above with the kids, has been teaching for two years now and could not be happier with his role in the movement. “When I was younger I barely even skated because there was nothing to skate and nobody to teach me. As I got into my teen years, I got more involved in skateboarding and do not know what I would be doing without skateboarding. I would probably be gang banging, doing drugs, or in jail if I had not pursued the skate life. Just from picking up that board, I now have the opportunity to steer the youth in the right direction.”
The skate clinic begins at 11 am and wraps up at 3 p.m..
The rest of the dates include:
July 27th-28th at Dyker Beach Park
July 29th-30th at Maria Hernandez Park
