Cher Vice,

book Urban Recreation, Akay and Peter display thirteen projects of the last four years. The most famous is Traffic Island, the little red cottage that lay on a cliff between two heavily trafficked roads until October this year. The Barsky Brothers have asked four people they rely on to help them tell their tale. Writer Kidpele describes their projects. Rasmus Malm, freelance journalist and editor of the documentary magazine Re:Public Service, has accompanied them on their adventures. Maria Lantz, photographer, artist and teacher at the Royal University College of Fine Arts, helps us contextualise the works in art history. Akay and Peter tell Ika Johannesson, journalist and editor-in-chief of Sex Magazine, about their lives and what compels them.
Akay has been active with posters, spray stencils, graffiti and installations in the urban environment since 1985. Peter Baranowski aka Klisterpeter is a much loved street artist, known for his stickers, posters, paintings and spray stencils of deer that can be found all over Stockholm, and for the camouflaged nesting-boxes that can be found on many Stockholm traffic signs.

Somebody down below mentioned the mulungeons of Appalachia. I researched a bit and found out that some of them trace their roots to Turkey, the country. Elvis, Cher and Lincoln have been claimed to be of mulungeon stock. That's pretty interesting and all but what about the Blue Fugates of Appalachia. They're called the Blue Fugates because their skin is blue. Or so it is claimed. I sure would be curious to see actual photos or maybe even motion footage of one of these mountain marvels but sadly all I have are these:

hey white guy, that incoherent shitstain of a retort you slobbered out proved my point beautifully. you are a typical yankee assneck who has nothing to feel superior about yet must find someone to look down on so you don't actually look around you at the horrible situation you live in daily. when the shit hits the fan, you will be the one crying like a pissweak girl because you have no electricity, water, money, etc. you will be the one giving up your humanity for a loaf of bread like the dependant little chode you are. not me bitch, i'll be doing just fine.

The fact that you despise anything different, smart, and hygenic? You're just mad that the country has progressed and you fell out of the loophole. What's even worse is how you rednecks shit on you native culture and roots, that's like an asian guy changing his last name to Markiewicz. Pm, I'd have to disagree with you a bit about those carpet bagin septics. The north tried to distance it self from the european countries and struggled for years to establish it's self as an indepnedant culture, even to the point of purposely changing the spelling with the help of webster of websters dictionary to conceive an American dialect.
The south has retained more of it's Europeoon roots than the north culturally. Much, if not all of southern slang is derivative of scotch-irish language of the time period. Words like: kin, reckon, gret, cracker (which is slang for scottish, and has nothing to do with slave owners) and many more words seemingly unique to the south are of British and Europeon decent. Not to mention the French roots of the Acadians later to be known as cajuns. Even during the war of the northern aggression schools were teaching spellings like honour as opposed to honor, and receiving support from France and Great Britain. My families southern customs, lore, and more importantly superstitions are largly similar to those I have learned of and seen in the UK.
Not to go to far in nit picking on your comment, I think it is more important to remember that the north was striving to secure cotton and tobacco exports by unifiing the more American and independant states that veiwed themsleves to be Republics. While it probably makes more sence to have a United States of America as opposed to a group of Republics, it's important to remember how q

appalachia does in fact extend north through new york. according to the us gov't. then again... what the fuck do they know.

melungeon history is interesting... as is the history of many of the folks who originally moved to that area. it's linked to indentured servitude and forms of slavery not generally (willingly) recalled by us history. divide & conquer, i guess.

& i wouldn't blame anyone for going into culture shock when entering a fucking walmart. that apogee of neoliberalism should be provoking nausea instead of complacency.

First off, Appalachia does not extend the who length of the Appalachian trail. It is centralised from North Alabama and Georgia up through Tennesse and Kentucky. The Ozarks are loacated in Arkansas and is similar but a completly different region.
Secondly, how does Appalachia kick ass?! It sucks- it's poor, and it lacks charm. It's a lot of very poor people who go into culture shock after driving 3 hours to the nearest wal-mart. Wheather the homes of Homer pictures are real or not, I have seen several homes like this with people actually living in them. Out side of the "nature" of Appalachia, when you can find a patch of it that is not strewn with old cars and washing machine chasis- it is pretty fucking dull. Hot and humid in the summer with clouds of mosquitos and cold and wet in the winter.
If you want to make this issue interesting, investigate the mulungions of the area. This is a race mixture unique to the area with specific charectoristics. Many people of the area are not even that sure who they are becouse each community is isolated from the next and media is a joke. Some think that mulungions are ancestors of "big foot". Elvis and Pr. Lincoln were linked to mulungions.
My memories of the area were of my uncles driving their trucks around the hills and getting shot at by land owners with shotgun shells filled with rock salt and harassing hermits up in the mountains.
