Akiko’s style tips 2: Onstage Fashion

preanticmj

Akiko playing with PRE at The Market Hotel in NYC

Big rock stars often have their own stylists and designers to make them costumes for big shows or music videos. Johnny Blue Eyes did Gossip and CSS, Christian Joy did Karen O and Klaxons. Nova Dando did Lightspeed Champion, La Roux and loads of upcoming bands. Someday I want these people to make me some costumes. I can’t afford them yet though. But, what I’m here to say is that if you are in a broke band, you can still look as fucked up and stylish as those rock stars. Here are some examples of DIY stage outfits that I’ve got involved in recently.

How to sex up your wardrobe (at a sex shop)

2

I’m not normally in to sex shops, but what with everyone always wearing the same old shit I figured I’d go along to one to see what clothes-esque things I could pick up. It’s a double whammy anyway: people can’t copy my style and it’s going to massively improve my sex life.

The leather skirt above is where is all started – sex shop chic for just £24.99. By the way, the zip goes all the way down. I like that.

I had a few friends over the other night and started showing off about how good all this stuff is. One thing led to another… and this is what happened. Read more »

Let’s face it, sheer fabric is fucking dangerous

sheer1

We’re in for treat at this year’s fashion week. We get to see hot girls who say they are 16 pretty much naked. Why naked? Well, “sheer fabrics” are also known as see-through nudity approximators. They are hot shit this year, according to Vogue. I’m having flashbacks to Rei Kawakubo for Commes des Garcons (chiffon and transparent PVC – Spring, 2007), which has been subtly touched upon in S/S 09 by Armand Basi and Fendi, to name a few. DIY fashion: How to create eBay Avant-Garde Styling™

I try to stay away from eBay. It’s filled with these highly styled eBay vintage stores and for some reason people are willing to pay silly amounts of money for what can be picked up for a few quid in a charity shop, thus jacking up the prices.

Gone are the days of £5 eBay bargains. This isn’t the sellers’ fault of course, particularly when there are shops like Kuku Vintage who do find incredible, ornate and highly unique pieces. I only hope and pray they too go the way of Nasty Gal Vintage and the Urban Collection and set up an actual online shop so we need not bother with the irksome bidding wars. Read more »

DIY fashion: Give it the one shoulder

Not all fashion DIYs are created equal. They can vary widely from the very basic to the very imaginative and difficult. I must first point out what the definition of fashion DIY is to me – someone who is untrained in the ways of sewing and who does things in a way that might not be considered anywhere near “proper” by a bona fide designer. But that’s the fun in DIY – it’s a little bit haphazard and a little bit spontaneous. While I have to admit that I am a bit of perfectionist, I still have fun with the most basic of DIYs.

Today, I decided I needed a jersey top with one shoulder. Call it the Blondie effect, if you will. I currently only own one single-shouldered top but with its sheeny, shiny fabric, it isn’t what I need to pair with my Sass & Bide PVC Black Rats. (If I wore the two together I’d end up looking like an oil spill). Luckily, I had a black jersey t-shirt with a very wide neck (see above), ripe for transforming into my desired top.

A very easy DIY to do, just find a top wide enough to fit on one shoulder and under the other arm. Try it first, if the neck fits across your body, you’re laughing. Read more »
