On “Hell is Round the Corner” Tricky admits that his one weakness (besides being totally mad) is sharp streetwear, hence, “Reduce me, seduce me, dress me up in Stüssy” – which proves just how much of a rebel brand it used to be. The original premium streetwear label was founded in the eighties by surfer Shawn Stussy and was massive by the nineties, but since he left so did some of the cachet. The t-shirts, polos and shirts in this Fred Perry collaboration are a return to form and make you feel all excited and desirous again.
Every sportswear and streetwear brand is going mad for upscale collaborations right now. They’re designed to appeal to people who don’t want to look like a boy in a man’s world but who don’t want to shop in department stores, sell out and buy a suit either. Fred Perry’s collaborations are definitely some of the absolute best. The stuff they do with Raf Simons is way better than his solo diffusion line too.
Stüssy’s late-eighties ads pushed the idea that going against the mainstream flow was the way to be.
