What Are You Wearing? - Stricken City

img663

This is the blog that celebrates the fact that if you’re good at playing instruments, then people throw clothes at you in the hope that you’ll wear it in NME, and Topshop will buy the collection after seeing it.

Stricken City get compared to the deliberately retro, naive and lo-fi sounds of C86 all the time. Everyone says their music is really “nice” and old indie kids love them. Also, their hot lead singer, Rebekah Rae, went to fashion college and so should know how to get dressed.

Vice: Hey Rebekah! Who would you say influences the way you dress?

Rebekah: No one in particular; I don’t look at anyone and think I’d like to dress like that. I like to feel comfortable… and I know I don’t seem like the sort, but something naughty too.

What era would you say you rip off the most?
The nineties – which is a bit sad as I can remember the nineties. For my graduate collection, I looked into a lot of seventies punk and I ripped off one of Sid Vicious’s white jackets. The Slits, Sid Vicious, maybe a bit of Debbie Harry and cockatiels – a lot of birds.

If you had to choose, would you choose music or fashion?
Music. Fashion is soul destroying, you work in fashion and you have to make it your whole life. I’m pretty happy spending my life making music.

Where do you shop and get your clothes?
I’m rubbish at shopping. I got some really nice jumpers from Lillywhites and Topshop. I really like Topshop, and the free stuff is nice, like the Black Dice watch [that] I love.

How would you describe your look?
Sportswear and leather.

What is the weirdest or best thing you’ve ever been given?
For ages and ages and ages, I saved up for a Balenciaga bag; a lot of people would think it’s a massive waste of money, but I’ll be able to treasure it my whole life. The first thing I wanted was a bag, then a dog and then a baby – and in that order.
