Elderly at heart

assisi-old-woman

I’ve always had a thing for all things retro and I’m particularly stuck in the 30s to 50s when it comes to clothes. With winter still on full blast I have no choice other than to swap my high-heeled pumps for some flat lace-ups which i wear with a pair of thick tights and a coat that just about covers my knees. Complete with a beret, I look like an awful lot like the grannies you see strolling through cemeteries.

The only thing that gives away my real age is the fact that I will still run around town like an excited child - something I could hardly do in a pair of 6-inch Margielas (not that I could afford those anyway).  However, a closer look around East London proves that I’m certainly not the only one channeling the elderly this season. Granny fashion is on its way forward and more girls are unafraid to really pile on the years - figuratively.

This lovely lady embodies granny fashion perfectly. You can’t be more literal than this. Even the sheer tights with an orange-browny twist are spot on.

This granny hipster - or granster - shows slightly more awareness of her fellow Shoreditchians for them to recognise her as one of theirs. I heart everything about this look.

Finally, the gran-fashion forward. Something tells me this lady felt inspired by Dolce & Gabbana’s recent fall/winter 08/09 ad campaign featuring models wearing headscarfs and plaid skirts.

So ladies, stop wasting your cash on Vogue and i-D. Just hang out with olds. Hotspots for them include:

  • nursing homes
  • any Spar, Lidl or Aldi
  • funeral services
  • South West London
  • Buckingham Palace (the queen is a total granny style icon)
