Here on the brand new Vice fashion blog we will be bringing you regular posts from our favourite fashion journalists and bloggers from around the world, all of whom we will be introducing in due course.
For now, please doff your pork pie hats and be upstanding for Katja, who runs a street and party style blog called GlamCanyon.
A Berlin native, Kat is glamorous, ambitious and talented. She was originally inspired by New York party photography while she spent time in the city in 2006/2007 and has successfully brought this unique blend of photography back accross the Atlantic.
Vice: You’re originally from Berlin. Fashion-wise, how does it compare to London?
Katja: The brief answer is: it doesn’t. Berlin is quite safe when it comes to fashion whereas Londoners are daring and enjoy pushing boundaries and being provocative. Frankly, I appreciate the latter much more. I always felt that people here are celebrating their individuality and think of their clothes as a means of self expression, almost like a form of art. That is not to say Berliners do not seek to express themselves through clothes but maybe it’s got something to do with adapting to your environment. In Berlin I still get stared at on the underground if I wear sequins or fur or if I’ve just been a little experimental with my make-up. In London, I could wear a bikini with a plastic bag on my head and no one would bash an eyelid.
As a disco queen, how do you think fashion and music fit together?
Everyone insists they’re inseparable but I would probably disagree. I don’t need to get inspiration from a song to choose my outfit for the day, and I’m sure most people in rock bands don’t care much about clothing (or at least they look like they don’t). I think the link really would be via the idea of self-expression and finding your ow identity – you are what you wear, what music you like, who you hang out with, what you do for a living etc.
Which trends do you think will carry on through 2009?
I’m all up for some more glamour. I think men should dress like gentlemen and women like ladies – but that’s just me. Ironically, I don’t believe in trends or even really know what they are at the moment. To me it’s always been about personal style. If you find something trendy that matches your style, great. But matching your style to the trend? Nuh-uh. Make the trend, don’t let the trend make you.
Which do you think was the best era for fashion?
I would love to have lived in the 40s and 50s. Women were so elegant and feminine and men were just absolutely gorgeous with their suits and their gelled hair. But that, again, is just a personal perception. Answering this question on behalf of everyone, I would have to say now is the best time because it’s just so wonderful to be able to wear clothes from any era on different occasions. Fashion has probably never been more fun.
