Last Saturday, Smirnoff threw the Melbourne leg of their Nightlife Exchange Project world tour. Basically they brought going out in Italy to Australia. Think Milano fashion parades, Venetian masquerade masks, Italo dance music, all that good Italiano stuff. Unsurprisingly, a fun night was had by all. For more Nightlife Exchange, visit here.

Since launching Vice in Australia nine years ago, we haven’t needed much of an excuse to throw a party. And while your recollection of these events past might be somewhat blurry, thankfully our snapshots aren’t. Over the next six weeks we’re going to be hauling a bunch of old images back into the light of day, beginning with part one below; how the nights generally begin.

PERFECT MAN II

Last Friday marked the opening of Perfect Man II, a group exhibition at White Columns curated by Rita Ackermann and Parinaz Mogadassi.

The works spanned all types of media. I was really attracted to the looping 1970 black-and-white short titled Fall 1 by Dutch conceptual performance artist Bas Jan Ader. He plays the perfect man who has been defeated and is too crushed to care, and he self-inflicts pain by tumbling off a roof and into some bushes. He is fully conscious and in control until he transforms his body into an object by deadening all human instincts. The act itself seems naive and helpless. I find him to be the perfect man because he is fully aware of his sadistic actions, in turn making him untouchable.

The show will be up through October 15, and the gallery will also host a series of events like readings, film screenings, and book launches. Full info and list of artists here.

WONDERING… SIGNS AND POSTERS

As my column this week I present a portfolio of previously unpublished photographs of signs and posters that I’ve snapped at various international destinations over the past seven years or so. These locales include Nashville, Halifax, New York City, Berlin, Istanbul, Tel Aviv, Philadelphia, Seoul, Moscow, Kiev, Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, Toronto, Johannesburg, Hamburg, Sitges, Barcelona, and Mexico City. You can figure out which ones go where.
