Tonight Spike Jonze and Lance Bangs will be at the Union Square Barnes & Noble singing DVDs and talking with TV’s John Hodgman (in a moderated panel-type scenario, not just chit-chatting). The subject of their conversation is Lance and Spike’s new documentary on Maurice Sendak and it’s not really a Q&A, but I bet if you picked your moment and phrased your questions really carefully you could presumably get them to dish about anything you want. Hopefully you’ve been checking our Where the Wild Things Are micro-blog thingie daily to see which artists we’ve decided to unveil during the lead-up to the release of the movie. And, if you’re of the artistic persuasion, you might be saying to yourself, “Why didn’t they ask ME to contribute something? I’m awesome.” Well, now’s your chance. As you might have gathered by the onslaught of banner ads, Warner Bros. has tapped the multi-armed media Shiva that is VICE to promote the new Where the Wild Things Are movie. It makes perfect sense considering that a) Spike Jonze is VBS’s creative director, b) we just featured an interview with him in our Film Issue, and c) VBS is airing a special mini-season of Art Talk featuring cast and crew from the film. On top of all that, we asked Johnny Ryan to curate 24 of his favorite artists (people like Nick Gazin, Matthew Thurber, Jordan Crane, Benjamin Mara, etc.) to draw their interpretations of the Wild Things for a special mini-mag that will be included with Vice’s October issue.
