VOID VISION ARE COLD-WAVE JAILBAIT

Void Vision is a minimal-synth duo based in binary orbit with semi-latus rectums at Philly and NYC. They just played this week’s Wierd party and believe you me, they totally gothed the roof off that sucker.

I know there are a lot of synthy duos plying the old cold-wave/post/new/minimal/whatever trade these days, but these two blend together a magical elixir of spooky danceness and dancy spookness with a female voice that makes me wish I’d paid way more attention in choir. So far all their tunes are on Myspace, but coming soon is a 7″ being put out by Sean Ragon of Cult of Youth and then a full-length on Wierd.

I know I sound like a terminal cheerleader here, but I promise it’s warranted. Check out this video from the last time they did Wierd.

Vice: You guys are like the minimal-synth Obits. You played one NYC show and suddenly there are record deals and limos and everybody won’t shut up about you. Did you guys see this coming or was it a surprise?
Hayden Payne: Very. We’ve been coming to the Wierd parties for quite some time and have been working hard to hone our live electronic set up a la a bunch of other Wierd artists.
Shari Volin: Yeah, I think what was most surprising was all the enthusiasm we were getting before we even played Wierd. I’m glad we didn’t disappoint.  A bigger shock was running into Andy Bell from Erasure at our show, and hearing his overwhelmingly positive response to us. I thought I was hallucinating.

How hard is it being a bi-city band in this very, very internetty day and age?
Hayden: We used to live close to each other in New Jersey and we’d practice and record in my basement. Since I’ve moved to New York for school, Shari comes to my dorm and we annoy the fuck out of my roommate. Fortunately electronic gear is pretty portable and quiet when need be.
Shari: It can be difficult, but I used to be in a band where one member lived in Delaware and the other in the Netherlands, so it’s definitely easier than that.

Since I’m guessing asking for your influences or most accurate band-comparisons will just lead to a bunch of Fad Gadget and early Depeche Mode, what is the least accurate band comparison you can think of? Aka, who’s your opposite?
Hayden: Foghat.
Shari: Just turn on the radio.

would really rather Vice leave coldwave alone. Too sacred to be tainted by hipster bullshit

phew! i thought they played at a WIRED party and did a double take. if bands are playing wired parties and i haven’t at least heard their name then i know i’m getting old and frail and need to start worrying about having kids so i don’t end up old and in the care of the state.
