SEX CHURCH WRITE ABOUT BUMMERS, MOSTLY

Last month my friend Nicholas sent me a package filled with photocopies of vintage soft-core biker porn with headings like “How to Buy Women Legally” and “The Last Nazi Bikers of the Third Reich.” Attached to the last page with a note written in magic marker promising two more gifts that would be following shortly: a tour tape from a group called Sex Church and a pair of black leather gloves. While I never got the gloves, I did get tipped off to one of the best new bands on the West Coast.

Sex Church emerge from Vancouver’s haze of pot smoke and hacky sacks sounding like a goth version of Cheater Slicks (without the Bostonian accents). They’re repetitive and hypnotic like Spacemen3 or Les Rallizes Denudes but more stripped down and sort of tougher. This may be their key to keeping the plot in a wash of FX and general psychness. I tried to chat with them recently, but for a band with a name like Sex Church, it was a bit of a snoozefest. Y’know, typical band full of dudes who hate things. Although when I asked what they write about, one guy answered, “Bummers mostly.” Which was pretty cute.

After the string of really good 7”s by Meth Teeth, The Anals, Blank Dogs, and Love Tan, it’s nice to see British Columbia’s Sweet Rot Records finally put out something Canadian. Sex Church’s debut 7″ was pressed in a run of 500, which will probably soon vanish like the rest of the label’s back catalogue. Here’s the A-side.
