If you weren’t really bored of hearing about Wavves, you’d probably be wondering what Nathan Williams was doing before all the hype, backlash, stage breakdowns and fights with Black Lips that followed. He was playing in a pretty good “tropical psych-folk trio” called Fantastic Magic and he dressed like like he played in Devendra Banhart’s backing band. They played a bunch of shows, released a CD-R, a tape and a 7″, and then split up. So what happened to the other members of the group? Two of them, specifically Matthew and Sundar, became Heavy Hawaii.
Imagine if Ariel Pink concentrated his nostalgia solely on the late 60s and ditched the early- to mid-80s and you might have some idea of what Heavy Hawaii sound like. It’s very Beach Boys, a little Syd Barrett, but mainly pretty fucking good. I’m guessing they will release something soon. For now, listen below.
Heavy Hawaii - “Teen Angel”

yeah, it’s pretty good but another thing i will have forgotten about in three months. too many of these beach boys wannabes around today. i adore the beach boys and i like hearing people try but no one’s ever near as good except for the first track on the besnard lakes record. that tune killed me.
