ZINE CREAMERS 1994: ABC NO RIO

21

I’m not sure if you know but ABC is a city-owned estate and we’re renting this space. They’re trying to evict us but we’ve been squatting on the upper floors. It’s not easy being an 18-year-old living in the rotten apple’s Lower East Side. Well, its a paradise to me but also a struggle. Its getting really cold and… I mean, I really don’t have good family but I met these kids on Rivington a while back and share so many of the same passions and we really have each other’s backs. It kinda feels like the T.R. house in Suburbia but not 1984, ’cause it’s 1994. It’s kind of funny–us squatting here has delayed the ousting process but a few of us have been arrested. The government, they don’t understand our growing community. They don’t understand this solidarity.

A few friends and I have been volunteering at the zine library every Friday and Sunday from 6 to 9 (come visit!), and the new Slug and Lettuce just came out. So please donate your radical, sk8, diy, riot girl per-zines as it will go down in the zine scene history! Here are some that we just got in but you gotta come in and look through them.

3

Get Raw, No Idea, personal zine of rants, raves, and collage.

4

City Limits: Beyond Good and Evil, Treating Drug Addicts Like Citizens

5

Tenant, New York City, have been on the case of pushing out squatters as of late. In their eyes, ABC isnt really legit enough as an organization and they even stopped accepting our rent check. This is such a sly trick they are using to rid of community-based organizations. They are also planning on selling our ABC to minorities for equality purposes. I back that giving affordable housing to minorities but this is our home.

6

Anarchist Yearbook, collection of the best anarchist literature.

7

The Raven, with an interview with Lisa Carver’s band Suckdog. I love this cover and the layout.

8

9

Rawhyde: this is a skate zine. It’s a riot.

10

Teens find human brain!!!!!!

Anyways, I’m not a psychic and cannot predict how long we can manage to stay but I hope for a long time. It would be a dream if the city would provide us funds to repair, rebuild, and strengthen our community building someday. Eh, maybe thats kind of naive of me to say. Who knows?

  8. Too bad the Zine Library didn't start 'til '98 says:

From the ABC no RIO website: http://www.abcnorio.org/facilities/zine_library.html

“This project began in the Spring of 1998 when we rescued the Blackout Zine Library from a squat in the South Bronx which was to be evicted. Since then numerous individuals have donated their personal collections, and zine editors and publishers regularly send us issues. Our collection grows daily.”
